Discovery of compounds that delay flowering could boost crop yields

In an era where climate change threatens food security, scientists worldwide are searching for reliable ways to improve crop production. Extreme weather and shifting seasonal patterns can disrupt traditional agricultural cycles, making technologies that regulate the timing of plant growth invaluable for farmers worldwide.

#Trauma may leave #epigenetic marks that are passed to following generations. Some preliminary evidence for this hypothesis comes from a (relatively small) study with Syrian families. Mechanisms unclear. But think about how this may affect historical trajectories of, e.g. countries traumatized by war. https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-025-00937-z
Can trauma from violence be genetically inherited? Scientists debate Syria refugee study

Study finds genetic imprints in three generations of Syrian refugees. Researchers urge caution in interpreting findings and call for replication.

6.) Can we measure our individual aging trajectories, or, a kind of "biological" age (i.e. how young is our body, are our organs and tissues and our cells?) that differs from our chronological age (i.e. how many years have we lived)? What is the current state of molecular biomarkers of aging to measure this in human aging, e.g. #epigenetic marks, plasma proteomics or #telomere length?

7.) Opposed to these molecular biomarkers, there is a number of physiological biomarkers that reliably predict individual aging trajectories, as well as morbidity and mortality risks. These are relatively easy to measure and interpret (and much cheaper!). Ample human data exist, across all age ranges, in healthy individuals and patients, both sexes and different ethnicities. Curiously however, they are often neglected in contemporary discussions. Examples include #VO2max as a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness (and endurance capacity!), body composition (relative #muscle and #fat mass, as well as fat distribution), muscle #force and #power, the amount of leisure time physical activity, or frailty indices such as gait speed.

Duckweed found to differentially mark old and new transposons without DNA methylation

Transposons, so-called jumping genes, are a threat to genomes, so plants work hard to prevent them from mobilizing and re-inserting into the genome. Spirodela polyrhiza, the most ancient member of the duckweed family, uses an understudied epigenetic mechanism to mark old transposons without DNA methylation.

DNA demethylation explains how tomatoes convert their bitter toxins into something more palatable

A multi-institutional team of bioengineers has identified the genetic mechanism that converts bitter toxins to palatable compounds in tomatoes. In their study published in the journal Science Advances, the group analyzed whole-genome bisulfite sequencing data obtained through other research efforts and conducted experiments in their lab that involved blocking the production of certain proteins to learn how tomatoes make themselves taste better to seed dispersers.
