The Wapack Range of New Hampshire and Massachusetts photographed from Buck Hill.

I originally created this panorama for the documentary film I made last year. Until recently, I had only identified the major peaks that are visible in this image. This now identifies and labels all of the visible peaks of the Wapack Range, which is generally considered to start with Mount Watatic in Massachusetts and continue north to North Pack Monadnock in New Hampshire. There are also three Massachusetts peaks at the leftmost side of the image which are not considered part of the range, as well as Mount Monadnock, which towers above New Ipswich Mountain almost directly behind it. I have added labels. The view is generally looking north-west with a range of about 305 - 320 degrees.

In the foreground are the TV towers located in the Needham/Newtown Highlands. There is another cluster of four towers below North Pack which are just off I-95 in Waltham MA. Several buildings on the campus of Brandeis University are visible to the lower left of these towers.

From left to right, these are all of the peaks labeled in the image with altitude and distance measurements based on Google Earth:

Mount Monadnock in Jaffrey NH photographed from Buck Hill! This mountain is about 69 miles away and is likely the furthest single object that can be seen from Buck Hill.

Distinctive “sheep’s back” shape of #MountMonadnock, #NewHampshire, USA

Viewed from near Jeffrey Center, one can discern that the near face is steepest. That face was downstream when the Laurentide Ice Sheet was scouring #NewEngland in the late #Pleistocene. The ice plucked boulders from that side, and ground a more gentle slope on the northwest side.

Monadnock is a popular climb, with many trails. It is 965 m, but is more than 300 m taller than any peak within 50 km. My #landscape #photo

Hiking Monadnock Mountain in New Hampshire is a joy at all times of year. Our article compares and maps five different ways up the mountain: https://www.trailspotting.com/2022/03/mount-monadnock-nh.html

Shape of a sheep or shape of a wig?
Roches moutonnées are glacially scoured rocky hills with planed-off slopes “up glacier”, and steeper “plucked” sides “down glacier” as the ice sucks chunks of rock up. The etymology is obscure:

(Atlantic article).

Many south to southeast slopes in New England are steeper than northwest slopes, e.g., Mount Monadnock in south central New Hampshire, USA.
