#Mondoweiss | The New York Times ignores an essential part of the Jeffrey Epstein story — Israel

"You simply cannot separate the shared love of Israel from Epstein’s mysterious rise. The Times investigation is naïve and stupid. No wonder people turn to Tucker Carlson. "

The New York Times ignores an essential part of the Jeffrey Epstein story — Israel

The New York Times has published a major exposé purporting to explain how Jeffrey Epstein rose to the top of the financial and political world, but it ignores one key topic: Israel.

#Mondoweiss | The problem with Hamas equating the Gaza genocide to the Holocaust

"By choosing to frame the events in Gaza through the Holocaust, Hamas reveals two dynamics: first, that the Palestinian tragedy is not being presented as a self-standing experience but rather through the lens of another catastrophe — one that Western powers have designated as the archetype of atrocity. This reinforces the authority of a moral system that is selectively deaf to Palestinian suffering and inevitably grants primacy to Western trauma. Second, the use of this analogy sends a message to Western audiences: “Believe us because what is happening to us resembles your own history.” This reinforces the idea that Western pain is the benchmark for all suffering"

The problem with Hamas equating the Gaza genocide to the Holocaust

Hamas’s effort to gain Western sympathy by comparing the Gaza genocide to the Holocaust is understandable but ultimately shortsighted. Instead, putting the genocide in the larger context of colonial violence could build genuine solidarity.

"Palestinians despise the courts. We hate the sight of a judge, knowing all too well that they are no different from the interrogator. We loathe the law and all it stands for in our context—a tool for oppression cloaked in legality. Even the lawyers, perhaps universally disliked, evoke our mistrust. But for us, the courts represent more than frustration; they are the place where our oppressive conditions are translated into legal language, where the weight of colonial domination is formalized with a veneer of legitimacy."

The ICC warrants: Palestinian skepticism and the glimpse of justice

Palestinians hold deep skepticism of courts based on generations of Israeli abuse. But the ICC warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu and Yoav Gallant are a moment to expose the contradictions of the American Empire and put a crack in the veneer of impunity.

@mishmoshk (inactive account) writes for #Mondoweiss, in the wake of the recent NEA assembly vote to stop using ADL materials:

... If the ADL’s history was not widely known before, its attacks on Jewish, Palestinian, and BIPOC anti-genocide protest over the past twenty months had led people to look more closely. “These are educators who believe in antiracist and social justice unionism. They’re beginning to understand Palestine in that context. They’re intolerant of the justification of violence,” one NEA member said.

Beyond those general objections, the ADL had fully sealed its fate by attacking NEA members themselves. Merrie Najimy, former president of the Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA), recounted that in 2024 the MTA was tasked by its elected board of directors with creating resources for educators themselves to learn the history of Palestine, a counter-narrative to the myth that Palestine was “a land without a people” that European Jews could simply claim. The ADL improperly took those internal materials, cherry-picked elements to claim that presenting Palestinian perspectives on being colonized amounted to “glorifying terrorists”, and “manipulated [them]… to label the state’s largest union of educators as promoters of antisemitism,” as MTA leaders wrote in February. The ADL followed with a barrage of denunciations of teachers and the union in the state legislative hearings and press. These in turn resulted in the doxxing of MTA members, death threats against MTA staff, and anti-labor attacks that are still ongoing. “Why would we partner with an organization that does us harm?” Najimy asked in the lead-up to the NEA vote.

(It's not clear to me from Gelman's article, or its linked sources, whether the ADL was directly responsible for misrepresenting MTA's teaching resources about the Gaza war at the Special Commission on Combatting Antisemitism, or if that falls mainly on the commission's co-chair, state rep Cataldo (D-Concord), but either way, the ADL's efforts to demonize and cow educators is undeniable.)

The National Education Association just voted to cut all ties to the Anti-Defamation League

In a momentous vote, the National Education Association voted to cut all ties with the Anti-Defamation League. The reason? “Despite its reputation as a civil rights organization, the ADL is not the social justice educational partner it claims to be.”

"Zohran Mamdani’s victory marks the end of Israel’s central place in U.S. politics
Zohran Mamdani's victory over Andrew Cuomo is a historic turning point for Palestine in U.S. politics. It reflects a growing fatigue with Israel’s role in American life and the slow implosion of Zionism under the weight of its own excess.

It may appear, at first glance, irrelevant—even absurd—that a mayoral contest in New York City, or the electoral fate of a councilwoman in Brooklyn, should hinge upon one’s position vis-à-vis Palestine. What, after all, does municipal governance—zoning, sanitation, housing affordability—have to do with the devastation of Gaza, the starvation of a people, the slow-motion spectacle of death under bombardment? And yet, this apparent disconnect—between the intimacy of local issues and the enormity of geopolitical violence—is precisely the condition under which American politics operates.

It is also within this disjuncture between scale and intensity, between geographic distance and ideological proximity, that something more fundamental becomes visible.

In this context, the victory of Zohran Mamdani over a figure so emblematic of institutional continuity and dynastic power as Andrew Cuomo is not a mere electoral anecdote. It is a political event. One that must be read not through the metrics of personality or campaign mechanics, but through the symbolic grammar of what is now speakable, representable, and electorally viable. Mamdani’s triumph indexes a shifting horizon—where Palestine, long treated as a 'third rail' of American politics, no longer electrocutes those who dare to touch it. It is, perhaps, not yet a mainstream moral consensus, but it is no longer a guarantee of political suicide."

#Mondoweiss | The Jewish supremacy at the heart of the Zionist project

'In 2018, the Knesset passed the Jewish Nation-State Law, which articulated very clearly that Israel was the nation-state of the Jewish people alone and, by implication, not of all its citizens (i.e. Palestinian “citizens” of Israel). The Jewish Nation-State Law is merely a clearer articulation of Israel’s founding structure. Despite this, most American Jews remain steadfast in their position that Israel is the “only democracy in the Middle East.”'

The Jewish supremacy at the heart of the Zionist project

Ideas of Jewish supremacy have been central to the Zionist movement from its beginning. Just as we call out white supremacy in the United States, we must call out Jewish supremacy in occupied Palestine.
