Fml, I had to migrate from an old #MacBook to a new one using thunderbolt. As per all docs, I disabled #Bluetooth and WiFi to force it to thunderbolt cable and it didn’t work no matter what I tried, and used a crappy p2p connection instead

So I gave up and let them find themselves over the faster wifi. And *now* #migrationassistant discovered the long lost #thunderbolt cable (3gbps) 🤦🏻‍♂️

New #MacBookPro day, and spent over 6 hours trying to get #MigrationAssistant to transfer my outgoing MacBook Pro to it. It always just stopped around 25% and gave no indication what was wrong. First via wifi, then several attempts using two different thunderbolt cables before I finally said screw it. Not good, #Apple

I have to say tho, setting up a clean, lean, and mean MacBook vs. bringing over a filesystem that I've been dragging through machines for at least 15 years, not a bad idea.

As someone who’s owned a Mac for ~25 years, and used Apple’s #MigrationAssistant to transfer stuff every time I’ve bought a new one?

I’m not surprised Microsoft reintroduced their version: I’m surprised they canceled the one that shipped with Vista …

The initial 5-hour estimate is hopefully way off. It’s only been running 20 minutes between when I snapped the photo and when I posted this toot and the ETA has plummeted to an hour and 25 mins.

Glad I had the notion to connect a USB-C cable instead of doing this over WiFi.

So, I used #apple #migrationassistant to pull in the apps and user accounts from my old #imacpro to my new #macstudio.

But it didn’t work (completely)? My #photos and #music were copied, but the apps only partially ‘connected’ the files to the database entries.

I had to re-download all my photos and music from #icloud. Which was annoying and slow. So now I’m in a state of, it-seems-to-match, but I’m not 100% sure.

None of my app settings were applied (safari extensions, etc).

Not great.
