Things are gonna get easier…

Gosh, there are so many songs, how do I pick just one? Music of any type generally puts me in a better mood so I’d have to pick the genre first and then the song, but this isn’t a morning to overthink so I’ll share a song that I heard yesterday that’s been in my head since. Before the Jackson 5 were The Five Stairsteps.

2026 isn’t so much better, or safer, here in the US than it was in 1970 when this song was released. The lyrics might not have been true then and they might not be true now, and they might never be true for all I know, but they sure sound good, and they feel good coming out of one’s mouth singing them.

Today in Labor History May 14, 1970: State police confronted anti-war demonstrators at Jackson State University, Mississippi. Shortly after midnight, they opened fire, killing two African-American students and wounding twelve others. No cops were ever arrested or indicted. This occurred eleven days after the massacre at Kent State.

"Twenty-eight National Guard soldiers fired about 67 rounds over 13 seconds, killing four students & wounding nine others, one of whom sustained permanent paralysis. Students Allison Krause, 19, Jeffrey Miller, 20, & Sandra Lee Scheuer, 20, died on the scene, while William Schroeder, 19, was pronounced dead at Robinson Memorial Hospital...shortly afterward."
