Buddhistdoor Quote for Today: Honen Shonin (1133–1212)

What a waste it would be, then, to live vainly, without giving heed to the teachings or putting them into practice. To die without making the least spiritual progress, how shameful! — Honen Shonin (1133–1212)

Jodo Shu Home Liturgy

Hello dear readers, I realized recently that after posting I home liturgy examples for Soto Zen, Rinzai Zen, and Tendai sect Buddhism, I had never posted about Jodo Shu sect home liturgy despite being a follower for many years. There are a couple reasons for this. #Buddhism #JodoShu #Chanting #Liturgy

Looking Back on Twenty Years As A Buddhist

I didn't really become a Buddhist, as in explicitly taking refuge in the Three Treasures, until my 20's. When I met my future wife, she was raised Buddhist, and approached it very differently. I quickly realized that I had serious gaps in my understanding of Buddhism. Reading books about Buddhism, and being Buddhist in one's life are two different things. #Buddhism #JodoShu #Nembutsu

This is the Kamakura Daibutsu at Kotoku-in in Kamakura. It was swelteringly hot there, but I still paid to climb into the Buddha.

Daily dose of #dharma from one of my favorite teachers ever, Robina Courtin, a Gelug nun.

I started doing this yesterday, adding it to my morning chanting/yoga practice. I found it very powerful. It isn't easy for me to speak kindly to myself; I teared up the first time I tried. But the effect it had on my mind was profound, and this morning I found it easier to start.

As a #PureLand Buddhist, I rely on the compassion of #Amitabha / #Amida #Buddha. That concept is a whole other subject in itself, which will seem foreign if your understanding of #Buddhism is primarily from #Theravada sources versus #Mahayana. The basic idea is that I ask Amitabha for help with my practice, instead of it being something I cultivate within myself, off my own back.

Today I told myself that, among other things, if a Buddha can see good qualities in me and decides that I am deserving of his compassion, then it must be true that I am indeed worthy of kindness and respect. Who am I to assume that my perspective as an addled, ordinary being, is more accurate than that of an enlightened Buddha?

I had never framed this thought as such before. Thinking it through today felt like I had unlocked a deeper truth.

Just finished my morning yoga. Here's the small travel altar I keep in the kitchen for incense offerings.
