It is said that Minamoto no Toru, who is said to have been the model for Hikaru Genji, had it made to resemble his own face. It was completed in 896, the first anniversary of Minamoto no Toru's death. Because Minamoto no Toru built Rokujo Kawara-in, he was called the Minister of the Left Side of Kawara.
