Here's a statement from a member of the Elm Fork John Brown Gun Club (JBGC) who was just found not guilty of assaulting cops while keeping fascists at bay during a drag performance in Ft. Worth, Texas, in April 2023.

It's short, but here's an excerpt:

I don’t want to mince words here. We watched for days as cops took the stand to lie, consistently contradicting each other and more wildly often misrepresenting and lying about the very things we were all watching together on screen. We watched as the accusations that Christian-fascists have long levied against me were methodically broken down to the lies they were.

After four full days of enormous tension the state sealed their fate when they marched a wall of cops into the courtroom to stare down the jury while they read my charge. After less than 45 minutes, I heard those beautiful words: Not Guilty.

The spike over the past year in confrontations at Drag shows and brunches has been a galvanizing force for some. Images of armed leftists defending such shows have done a lot for organizing, and while it's worrying how necessary such action has become, the trend of community defense is hopeful.

However, I can't help wonder what comes next. As more state governments are enacting bans on trans care and drag, the threat has escalated. What happens when the angry anti-trans mob appears outside a drag brunch, this time bolstered with cops? Does armed leftist defense dissipate with the threat of state violence?

We can't tolerate oppression like this, but how many blink in the face of such escalation? We need community defense more than ever, in whatever form it takes.

The liberation for all people that Chairman Fred fought and died for will not be achieved by internet discourse or navel gazing while maintaining perfect fidelity to your particular ideology. You gotta get out in the real world and improve some material conditions or at least build some community offline. Join the #IWW #JBGC #sra #HPNGC #FoodNotBombs or SOMETHING and get out into your community and DO SOMETHING.

#Tennessee is trying to push a bill to ban Drag Shows. The implications of such a thing are far reaching. If followed, it is worded such that it could even be used for banning pride parades.

Meanwhile Trump is talking about his 2024 election promises already and going after Trans people is top priority. The GOP want to live out their fascist wet dreams, to play dress up as jackbooted thugs, to goose-step on our rights.

Rights don't exist just because they're written on paper. They exist because infringement of them is met with violence by the people. We cannot let them gain even an inch, for when they do they'll use it to infect education and raise up a whole new generation of fascists.

The #queer community needs to be prepared. You may not like guns but Nazis are worse. Arm yourself, get involved with a defense group like the #SocialistRifleAssociation or #JohnBrownGunClub or even create your own if that's more comfortable for you.

Whenever I surprise a liberal with my support for #guns, they typically jump to a few tired arguments. They assume I fantasize about killing an intruder, fighting tanks, or dying to a swat team.

My favorite response is to explain #CommunityDefense to them. Not home defense, not guerilla warfare, that's what they expect.

But the best utility for gun ownership is the defense of your community. We're seeing this now with all the #DragBrunch defense. The number one deterrent and protection from armed fascists marching in your streets is if those fascists know they aren't the only ones with a weapon. You don't need to be in an organized militia; sheer prevalence can be enough.

It's about a balancing of the perceived and actual power between groups. It's the same way governments are much less likely to genocide armed communities. They know they will meet resistance.
