According to WHO, Health Literacy is "being able to access, understand, appraise and use information and services in ways that promote and maintain good health and well-being". Health literacy can help us be better equipped to talk to professionals, speak up for ourselves and others, and see better outcomes from healthcare.

A new paper I was involved with is out. We reviewed 90 studies on health literacy for people with intellectual disability, their supporters and healthcare professionals. The main finding was it's relational, not individual, distributed across people, relationships and systems - not a skill you either have or don't.

The bit I keep thinking about is that our Lived Experience Reference Group asked why we hadn't captured independent decision-making (we'd focused on shared decision-making). They were right and we went back to answer that.

Open access paper in Health Expectations. Led by my brilliant UNSW colleague Maryann Barrington with a genuinely great team.

Across a woman’s life there are three major physiological transitions: puberty, pregnancy/childbirth, and menopause.
Medicine tends to treat them as separate stories. Lived experience often doesn’t.
This essay explores a single regulatory pattern that reappears across these stages — sometimes as overwhelm, sometimes as crisis, sometimes much later as muscle cramps or autonomic symptoms — not as pathology, but as boundary dynamics under changing conditions.
It’s about recognition, not diagnosis.
About regulation, not “coping better”.
And about why many women sense continuity where systems see fragments.
If this resonates — for you, your daughters, or your patients — you’re not imagining the pattern.

“It became a joke”—how Poland’s government lost the battle over health literacy to the church and right wing groups

A much heralded overhaul of Poland’s health education programme has become a target for right wing and religious groups that could have major consequences for sexual health and disinformation. Anna Caldwell reports On 1 September 2025, the Polish Ministry of National Education’s new health education programme began. Aimed at young people aged 10 to 19, it is intended to educate children on how to live healthy lives, deal appropriately with stress, and gain an awareness of contemporary threats, including health misinformation and disinformation, as well as understanding online security.1 But the curriculum has been derailed after major backlash from the Catholic Church and right wing groups. The new programme replaced traditional “family life education” classes that were largely based on Catholic doctrine, focused on promoting stable marriage and supporting family procreation. Plans to make the health education programme mandatory were scrapped on 15 January 2025, when it was made voluntary as a political compromise to avoid a multi-party coalition crisis due to the syllabus’ controversy. In August, the Polish Catholic Church appealed for parents to remove their children from participating in what it called the “systemic depravity” of the “demoralising classes.”2 Bishops have dubbed the syllabus “anti-family” and “gender destabilising.”3 Preliminary data provided to the Polish Press Agency by Warsaw City Hall show that, varying by region, approximately 60-80% of students withdrew from …

Heute Morgen in WDR5.
