Laid down in 1918, but not commissioned until February 1924, HMS Hermes was the first ship designed as an aircraft carrier, although the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Hōshō was the first to be launched and commissioned. For #ThrowbackThursday here's a shot from 1982 when my family - like so many other families in #Portsmouth - headed down to #Southsea to see off the task force setting sail for the #Falklands following the invasion by Argentina. That is the aircraft carrier #HMSHermes in shot as our family was friends with another, the father of which ran the boiler rooms aboard.
