In an advance preview of the coming #FalklandsWar, on #ThisDayInHistory in 1982 #Argentina sent Marines, disguised as civilian scientists, to raise the Argentinian flag on #SouthGeorgiaIsland, a tiny British Antarctic dependency & research base. The war broke out two weeks later.

"The ship is the only sunk by a submarine in active combat since ARA General Belgrano during the Falklands War "

Ah yes, the Belgrano, and the stain that left on the UK

We had another sea day after visiting the penguins at the nature reserve in Argentina's Punta Tombo and then we arrived at the Falkland Islands. We'd been warned beforehand that getting off the ship at the Falklands wasn't always possible because of the weather conditions but we were lucky enough to arrive on a gloriously sunny day.

After tendering ashore we headed off on an excursion of several hours visiting the battlefield locations from the 1982 Falklands War. Being from Portsmouth we both had memories of being in the crowds when the task force left and returned to the city, and a friend's dad served on HMS Hermes at the time.

The tour had several stops for photos and chats about battles, military attitudes, and anecdotes from our sarcastic guide (most of which went over the heads of the Americans on the tour) and we visited Estancia, Mount Kent, and Mount Harriet.
