The Spiritual Care Specialist Training is designed to help people engaged in ministries of care strengthen their ability to respond to the concerns of those they serve. Many caregivers find themselves walking alongside individuals facing addiction, trauma, mental health challenges, or domestic violence. These situations often require an understanding of behavioral health concepts in order to respond ethically, safely, and effectively. The training provides the grounding needed to face these situations with greater knowledge and confidence.

This 48 hour course unfolds in two phases that together offer both flexibility and structure. Phase 1 includes 28 hours of self paced content. Participants complete 16 hours of prerecorded lectures along with 12 hours of homework and personal reflection assignments. All materials are provided at the time of registration, and those who register early may begin working through the content before the live sessions start. The self paced nature of this portion supports a thoughtful and steady engagement with the topics.

Phase 2 includes 20 hours of live instruction held through Zoom. These sessions meet on Tuesday evenings from April 7 through May 26 from 7:00 PM to 9:30 PM Eastern Time. Attendance at all live sessions is required in order to complete the program. Participants study a variety of topics, including ethics, spiritual assessment, listening for healing, mental health, substance abuse, trauma, domestic violence, marriage and family, grief, and other essential areas of practice.

The program reflects a commitment to providing high quality education in spiritual care and supports both volunteer and professional caregivers. Participants who finish all requirements receive a certificate of completion. Registration costs 600 and requires a brief meeting with an instructor before a registration code is provided.

SIP Level 2 begins on 03/20/26 and expands therapists’ capacity to work with clients’ spiritual resources through focused study in Course 2.1, Spiritual Interventions: Working with Spiritual Resources, Part 2. This course presents seven common spiritual interventions, enabling therapists to draw from explicit and implicit practices such as sacred texts, music, nature, meditation, and prayer. Participants learn to ground these interventions in careful spiritual assessment and to apply them ethically in clinical settings.

The curriculum emphasizes tailoring interventions to client needs, strengthening participants’ ability to identify internal and external resources that support resilience, meaning making, and healing. Learning occurs within a collaborative, multidisciplinary environment that encourages curiosity, reflection, and attention to the whole person.

The instructors bring deep experience. Beth Toler integrates psychotherapy, theology, and spirituality with expertise in trauma informed work and family systems. Her teaching emphasizes compassionate presence and meaning making. Tere Canzoneri draws from psychodynamic theory, systems theory, and mindfulness based approaches, offering learners a reflective and present focused teaching style rooted in decades of clinical practice. Melissa Lemons brings an eclectic, relational therapeutic approach informed by supervision, higher education, pastoral leadership, and clinical experience with diverse populations.

Together, they offer grounded instruction that supports therapists in applying spiritual interventions responsibly and effectively.
