exteraGram violates the GPL, and I cannot remain silent about it.

It remains closed source. Despite promises to open the code in February and being a fork of Telegram, which is strictly protected by the GPL, the developers refuse to share their code, citing "fear of theft."

So finally I published me post about the idea of byte equivalent #decompilation of the #Linux #kernel using #EvolutionaryAlgorithms in the hope that we could mainline Android phones and tablets, whose companies are violating #GPL by not releasing the kernel source code.

I really don't know if it's possible. Or if it is, how long will it take. It's research. And research means exploring the unexplored areas. You might find a little silver, or you might find few kilograms of gold. Or you might explore the areas for 2 years and in the end, find nothing.

Decompiling the GPL violated Linux kernel using Evolutionary Algorithms

TLDR: We want to decompile a binary code, into the byte equivalent C code. We look at this from an optimization viewpoint. We have a generated C code(or AST) and we want to optimize it so when we compile it, it is equivalent to the binary code, byte by byte. And I think it’s better to use a population based optimization metaheuristic to do this. Such as Genetic Programming. Requirements to understand this post The idea I’m writing about is very deep. You need to know the current problem we have about companies violating GPL and not releasing the Linux kernel source code used in their devices. Then you need to know what an Algorithm is. What a Heuristic is. And what is the difference between them. And you also need to know what an optimization problem is. And what is our goal in these problems. After that, you need to know in this very specific optimization problem, we are not looking for “good enough” solutions unlike most other optimization problems. We are rather looking for the “perfect” solution, if we can find one.

Farooq's

Hey. If you've got a #Kobo #ebookreader, I will appreciate if you could extract some information from your device. Currently, I'm contributing to #postmarketOS wiki. Since #onyxboox refuses to release the kernel source code for its devices, I am trying to gather information about different ebook readers with #eink panel. So if someone wanted to mainline a #boox device, they could use drivers from Kobo since they release the kernel source code.

I would really hate my #booxleaf to become useless, because onyx does not give updates anymore nor it releases the kernel source code so the community can provide an alternative OS or ROM. By doing so, not only onyx contributes to #ewaste. But also forces users to change devices like every 2-3 years. Even when the device is working good. Like me device. Needless to mention #GPLViolation here.

I will post about me plans, later, God willing. For now, I am optimistic about mainlining me device and also #BooxPage. Because both use Snapdragon which has good support in mainline, it's an ebook reader so you don't need to add support for modem and GPU, and the Carta 1200 screen used in these two devices are also used in other e-book readers such as Kobo.

BTW, boosts appreciated! If you haven't got a wiki account, you can ping me and I can add the information :)

Edit: Thank you so much. There are 40 boosts so far. I wanted to say if you got other ebook readers with eink which they release the kernel source code, feel free to add them to the wiki, too.

@algernon Remember how Sony committed copyright violation in their rootkits? Including of GPL code.

Also, what led to FSF v Cisco systems.

Strong copyleft at least provides something that can be used in court, but indeed it'll probably still be a daunting and expensive task.

SFC-funded lawsuit gets software repair and reinstall for users of AVM routers

Software Freedom Conservancy (SFC) today announces the conclusion of a lawsuit that we funded and supported in Germany. (As is typical with German cases, SFC was unable to give public updates during the case.) The defendant, Berlin-based AVM, ultimately delivered the necessary information to reinstall modified software on their device. Delivery of this information resolved the lawsuit. The plaintiff was Sebastian Steck, who received a grant from SFC to pursue this work. Steck purchased an AVM router in May 2021 and quickly found that the source code candidate which AVM sent him could not be compiled and reinstalled onto his router. AVM, the largest home router manufacturer in Germany, refused to correct its source code candidate. Steck sued AVM in a Berlin court in July 2023.

What a disaster this "let's open-source WinAmp" PR stunt has been.

The issues are just being spammed incessantly, they had copyrighted code from Dolby in there, looks like they've violated the LGPL, their license violates the GitHub terms of service.

ltmain.sh isn't a source file, it's the compiled output of a bunch of m4 code from libtool. The version of ltmain.sh in #GNU #binutils does not correspond to any version of the libtool sources (release tarballs or libtool.git). We don't have the Complete Corresponding Source to binutils' ltmain.sh! #GPLviolation :P

(It has a --no-finish flag that no libtool sources have ever had.)

I remember that back when the first lawsuits happened, journalists explained an interesting & surprising fact: if you are a company who uses (parts of) GPLed software and you get dragged to court over an alleged #GplViolation, you should have your lawyers argue that the #GPL is valid. Because if it were not valid, you would have no license. And without a license, standard copyright rules prevent you from doing anything with the software - even from simply downloading it!
