Last spin of this Saturday night, and I’m opening all the windows, and turning the knob FULL RIGHT.

The first two Pumpkins albums are essential cornerstones of my youth. I knew exactly where I was when I heard both for the first time.

I bought Gish on cassette from Spinnaker’s in Hyannis, Ma the same day I bought my CD copy of Dinosaur Jr.’s Green Mind (I only had enough for ONE CD). I threw Gish in my Walkman and walked the beach while my sister and her boyfriend made out, and I got my brains blown out.

I Am One, Siva, and Rhinoceros right out the gate are still in my top 10 SP tunes. Gish is heavy, gnarly, psychedelic, dreamy… ALL OF IT.

Two years later, another insane masterpiece would completely shake the foundations of my world.

Trump’s Wierd Debate Tactic Comes from Creationists

A dishonest creationist debating tactic shouldn’t go unchallenged in American life.

Or in national politics

the #Gish #gallop takes its name from the creationist Duane Gish
-- who frequently challenged biologists to debates about evolution.

His tactic consisted of
🆘talking fast and with confidence, bombarding opponents with falsehoods, non-sequiturs and enough cherry-picked factoids to confuse the audience.

Scientists debating him faced the challenge of sifting half-truths from outright lies
and finding the right evidence to refute them systematically,
all within the few minutes allowed in response.

Which effectively meant that when the bell went off, the Gish gallop left the scientist “stumped”
and Gish declaring victory for creationism.

Such a spectacle leaves the audience less informed than they were before the debate,
all at the hands of a debater whose 💥only goal is to discredit their opponent and “win” the debate.

Blogkino: The Night of the Hunter (1955)

Heute zeigen wir im #Blogkino den #Thriller "Die Nacht des Jägers" aus dem Jahr 1955 mit vielen filmischen Untertönen unter der Regie von Charles #Laughton und mit Robert #Mitchum, Shelley #Winters und Lillian #Gish in den Hauptrollen. Das Drehbuch von James #Agee basiert auf dem gleichnamigen, leider nur noch antiquarisch erhältlichen Roman von Davis #Grubb aus dem Jahr 1953. Die Handlung dreht sich um einen korrupten #Pfarrer, der sich in einen #Serienmörder verwandelt und versucht, eine ahnungslose #Witwe zu bezirzen und 10.000 Dollar zu stehlen, die ihr hingerichteter Mann versteckt hat.

Der Roman und der Film basieren auf der wahren Geschichte von Harry Powers, der 1932 für den Mord an zwei Witwen und drei Kindern in Clarksburg, West Virginia, gehängt wurde.

1992 wurde "Die Nacht des Jägers" von der United States Library of Congress als "kulturell, historisch oder ästhetisch bedeutsam" eingestuft und für die Aufnahme in das National Film Registry ausgewählt. Die einflussreiche Filmzeitschrift Cahiers du cinéma wählte The Night of the Hunter 2008 zum zweitbesten Film aller Zeiten, hinter Citizen Kane.

#gish characters are popular. but the excellent #Dragonbane #TTRPG from #FreeLeague doesn't allow for them - any metal armor or weapons at hand means no spellcasting. My homebrewed Heroic Abilities look to change that by allowing it at an addtional Willpower cost.

#GreatAlbums1990s - #SmashingPumpkins – #Gish (1991). Early Pumpkins combined the ethereal glimmer of shoegaze with Black Sabbath riffs and big Boston hooks. How dare they! Still, on Gish the stew works beautifully, as the Trans-Am grind of “I Am One” and “Siva” lead into the adrenalized dream-pop of “Rhinoceros,” “Crush,” and “Suffer.” Billy Corgan later buried his 4AD affinities in a blaze of thunder – a lucrative but sad decision.
