Menschen, die durch Löcher und Spalten in Mauern und Zäunen schauen – dieses Motiv gab es natürlich schon öfter. Fallen euch bekannte Aufnahmen dazu ein? Ich werfe mal Fred Steins „Hole in Fence“ von 1936 ein – übrigens noch bis Mitte Juni zu sehen in der Leica Galerie in Wetzlar.

People peering through holes and gaps in walls and fences—this motif has, of course, been seen many times before. Do you know of any famous photos like this? I’ll mention Fred Stein’s “Hole in Fence” from 1936—which, by the way, is on display at the Leica Gallery in Wetzlar until mid-June.

Die aktuelle Monatsaufgabe bei ARF dreht sich um Serien. Ich möchte dafür etwas Neues beginnen. Zuletzt waren mir immer mal wieder Menschen aufgefallen, die Blüten fotografieren. Der Impuls, diese selbst dabei zu fotografieren, kam leider immer zu spät. Also bin ich am Wochenende in den botanischen Garten gegangen. Statt der Blüten haben die meisten Menschen dort tatsächlich sich selbst oder gegenseitig vor und unter Blüten fotografiert. Nicht meine Intention – aber auch sehenswert. Blütenfotograf:innen gab es natürlich auch: vom Smartphone bis zur Systemkamera mit riesigem Teleobjektiv war alles dabei. Und einfach nur mal die Nase an die Blüten zu halten, geht natürlich auch!

The current monthly challenge at ARF is all about series. I’d like to start something new for it. Lately, I’ve noticed people taking photos of blossoms here and there. Unfortunately, the impulse to photograph them came too late every time. So I went to the botanical garden at the weekend. Instead of the blossoms, most people there were actually photographing themselves or each other in front of and beneath the blossoms. Not my intention—but worth seeing nonetheless. Of course, there were also blossom photographers with everything from smartphones to system cameras with huge telephoto lenses. And simply holding your nose up to the blossoms is also an option, of course!

Meisterhafte Standortwahl… 🙃 – die Lampe halb verdeckt und die Überwachungskamera mit im Bild (aber immerhin im Schatten). Aber vielleicht musste es auch wie so oft in der Streetfotografie schnell gehen. Nach fast einem Jahr habe ich jedenfalls einen für mich passenden Beschnitt gefunden. Nur dass ich mich nicht entscheiden kann: die nüchterne Klarheit der monochromen Variante oder doch die warmen Farben der Farbversion? Was bevorzugt ihr und warum?

Masterful choice of position… 🙃 – the lamp is half-hidden and the security camera is in the frame (but at least it’s in the shade). But maybe, as is so often the case in street photography, it had to be done quickly. In any case, after almost a year, I’ve found a crop that works for me. The only problem is that I can’t decide: the stark clarity of the monochrome version, or the warm colors of the color version? Which do you prefer, and why?

Der gelbe Durchgang gegenüber der „Deutschen Med“ mit Blick auf selbige lud mal wieder auf ein Foto ein. Als sich gegenüber die Sonne in Form eines Blendensterns zeigte, musste ich schnell handeln. Die Sonne würde dort nur wenige Minuten so günstig stehen – wenn überhaupt. Also schnell die Kamera mit dem Ultraweitwinkel aufs Ministativ und dann? Da laufen einfach nicht genügend Leute lang und dann meist nur am Rand. Nach ein paar frustrierenden Versuchen mit dem laaangsamen Auslöser der XApp hatte ich irgendwann endlich ein brauchbares Foto mit meinen eigenen Beinen geschafft.

The yellow passageway across from the “Deutsche Med,” with a view of the building, once again invited me to take a photo. When the sun appeared opposite and created a sun star, I had to act fast. The sun would only be in such a favorable position there for a few minutes—if at all. So I quickly mounted the camera with the ultra-wide-angle lens on the mini tripod, and then? There just aren’t enough people walking by, and when they do, they’re usually only on the edge. After a few frustrating attempts with the sloooow shutter release of the XApp, I finally managed to get a usable photo using my own legs.
