The Sidekick

Amongst other things, McLellan was an avid art collector and after his death in the 1850s, the City of Glasgow purchased his art collection which formed the basis of its first public art gallery (the McLellan Gallery on Sauchiehall Street) and still forms an important part of the collection in Kelvingrove Art Gallery to this day.

153 Queen Street in Glasgow. Easily overlooked, this is none-the-less an impressive building which dates from 1834. Designed by David Hamilton for Archibald McLellan, it was built on the site of the city's original Theatre Royale, which was built in 1804 and was described as being unequalled outside of London. The theatre burned down in 1829 and John Henry Alexander took over the name for his theatre on Dunlop Street.

Looking up through three storeys to the impressive oval skylight near the entrance to the Gallery of Modern Art (GoMA) in Glasgow. This central lightwell was at the heart of the original Georgian mansion built for William Cumminghame of Laidlaw in 1778. Cunninghame was one of the Glasgow merchants who made their fortune trading tobacco and sugar from the slave plantations of the Caribbean and North America.
