In Hungary, we often found such blue waterwells at the roadside in the villages, perfect for filling our water bottles again and again in this hot weather, and great for cooling our heads and washing our hair. 💦😅
Also great was that the planned route often led us on separate bike paths. Really relaxing!
A thunderstorm was forecasted for the evening, so it was clear to us that we preferred a sleeping place with a roof. However, the search was quite difficult. The area was very populated, with one village lining up after another; there was not one picnic spot in sight, and no shelters were marked on the map. When we stumbled upon an unused event space with a large covered stage just outside of a village, we decided to stay there, we couldn't have wished for a better shelter, even though everyone could see us.
the night was quite relaxed 😴 and we stayed dry.
Due to another rainy hour in the morning, we had not a hurry to leave. Slowly we packed our things up in the dry, had breakfast, and drank coffee. Despite our late start that day, we made good progress. We passed by a really cool 3D mural. Of course, the size in the photo doesn’t convey how it was in real life.
In the evening, we pedaled through the city of Eger and then started looking for a suitable campsite again. The area was very touristy, so we wanted to set up our tent in a somewhat more hidden spot. After searching for quite a while along our route we reached already the Bükk Mountains, a densely forested, hilly national park. It was all uphill from there, and on both sides of the road, it was steep and completely overgrown.
Finally, after 65 km and a little over 1000 meters of elevation gain, we were able to set up our tent in a hiker's parking lot 🏕️
