A final 2023 print for #ArtAdventCalendar: I wanted to include a Canadian folktale in #FolktaleWeek2023 so for “found” I illustrated the Mermaid of the Magdalenes. I liked the idea that this fairytale is about something as prosaic as finding tinned sardines.

The rugged east coast Magdalene Islands are all but barren of grass & trees, but the waters are rich in fish and people called it the “Kingdom of Fishes”. 🧵1/n

Another recent print from #FolktaleWeek2023 for #ArtAdventCalendar: the Sídhe, the Aos sí, the fair folk, the good people, or the people of the shee from Irish folklore, who live underground. You may know the banshee, or Bean sídhe or woman of the sídhe. In fact the very word Sídhe is the term for earthen mounds like the one in my #linocut and the Aos sí are “the people of mounds.” 🧵1/n

For #ArtAdventCalendar Day 15, another recent #FolktaleWeek2023 print I made for the prompt sleep. The baku of Japanese myth was a chimera creature made from leftover parts, with the body of a bear, the claws of a tiger, the tail of a cow, the trunk and tusks of an elephant with the ears and eyes of a rhinoceros, and it eats nightmares! You can call on it if you have bad dreams. 🧵1/2

Folktale week is done. I've put all my illustrations and the orignal fairy tale I wrote for it on Substack. You can read and see it all here (no subscription needed).

Folktale Week 2023

A story about finding the light

Jodie’s Substack
FOUND - 'Bluebeard'
A fairy tale by Charles Perrault, written in 1695. An archetype of toxic masculinity - a serial murderer whose most recent wife unlocks a forbidden room in his palace and finds the bodies of the unfortunate women who went before her. She drops the magical key to the room and the bloodstains on it later reveal her transgression to Bluebeard.

A little process video for my Vasilisa The Beautiful drawing that I did for this year’s Folktale Week! #folktaleweek2023

I managed to make a new print for all 7 of the #FolktaleWeek2023 prompts! Always a delight to see how artists interpret the prompts and find more wonderful illustrators to follow! My thanks to all the organizers!

Check out all the hashtags (FolktaleWeek + each of lost, ink, sea, sleep, underground, illusion and found) to see the magic.

My drawing of Vasilisa The Beautiful for the final day of Folktale Week! I made it just in time ✨ For “Found”, I decided to depict the scene where Vasilisa has just been gifted the boon of light by Baba Yaga for completing all of her tasks, and with burning skull-staff in hand, Vasilisa quickly and easily finds her way home through the dark forest. I decided to try my hand at a different sort of fairy tale/illustration style for this drawing, and it was fun, but also challenging. I’ve been asked many times over the years to draw Vasilisa, and I’m glad I finally got the chance to!

Strega Nona has been one of my favorite #KidLit characters since I was small. She lives with Bambolona & Big Anthony. Everyone assumes they are Strega Nona’s kids, but they meet & form a family over many books. I love this example of a Family of Choice, aka Found Family

I wanted to include a Canadian folktale so my final #FolktaleWeek2023 #FolktaleWeekFound illustration is of the Mermaid of the Magdalenes. I liked the idea that this fairytale is about something as prosaic as finding tinned sardines.

The rugged east coast Magdalene Islands are all but barren of grass & trees, but the waters are rich in fish and people called it the “Kingdom of Fishes”.
