Roses are red, violets are…yellow? Many species of the genus Viola share the color associated with their name. Coe has a handful of violet species, but none are violet violets. One common non-violet violet found this time of year is the California Golden Violet, or “Johnny-Jump-Up” (Viola pedunculata). These golden-yellow flowers grow in abundance on grassy hillsides. To attract pollinating insects, they follow the sun throughout the day to stay illuminated. The black lines on their petals are like little traffic arrows directing insects to the delicious nectar. Johnny-Jump-Ups are harder to see from behind, so it’s quite possible to hike the entire day and never see one. Thus, if you happen to be on a grassy slope in early spring with the sun in your face, turn around. You might just see a hidden golden treasure appear before your very eyes.
