Roses are red, violets are…yellow? Many species of the genus Viola share the color associated with their name. Coe has a handful of violet species, but none are violet violets. One common non-violet violet found this time of year is the California Golden Violet, or “Johnny-Jump-Up” (Viola pedunculata). These golden-yellow flowers grow in abundance on grassy hillsides. To attract pollinating insects, they follow the sun throughout the day to stay illuminated. The black lines on their petals are like little traffic arrows directing insects to the delicious nectar. Johnny-Jump-Ups are harder to see from behind, so it’s quite possible to hike the entire day and never see one. Thus, if you happen to be on a grassy slope in early spring with the sun in your face, turn around. You might just see a hidden golden treasure appear before your very eyes. Can dogs climb trees? Gray Foxes certainly can! With their hooked claws, they are the only native member of the dog family in the Americas that exhibits this cat-like behavior. The Gray Fox (Urocyon cinereoargenteus) is a common mammal found at Coe. They are omnivorous and will eat a variety of plants and small animals such as rodents, birds, lizards, and berries—just to name a few. And that tree-climbing ability is useful for thieving succulent bird eggs or a nice, juicy squirrel. Gray Foxes are cunning and opportunistic and will easily slip through a car window or inside your tent to steal your sandwich bread, so be sure to help keep Gray Foxes and all park wildlife wild by properly storing your food when camping.
