OMFG, this is a massive dark pattern.

I went to a networking event this weekend. Presumably one or more people typed my very public email address into LinkedIn, probably to try and find me (even though I told lots of people I don't have LinkedIn).

LinkedIn sent me a people you know email. Rude. I tried to sign in, to verify that I don't somehow have an account.

IT AUTOMATICALLY CREATED AN EMPTY ACCOUNT FOR ME AND THINKS I LIVE IN VALLEJO.

Fuck you LinkedIn. Fuck you so hard.

..of course #CBS bought Fender from Leo in 1965 and pretty much made a mess of things for awhile... but the brand stumbled along under its own momentum for a bit..

#Gibson has also traded hands a number of times.... with varying results..

after reading more about recent development with Bambu Lab 3D printers enshittification and going after those who don't use their software by shutting down printers of those people, they're another company at my list of those for whom I wish bankruptcy. publicly shame them, just like other companies who engage in enshittification, as much as possible.

BTW this is closely related to the Four Pillars of Enshittification™️; they control a significant market share including vendor lock-ins & don't feel they need to listen to their customers, or indeed to their employees, most if whom I have to believe fucking hate this attitude towards the music & musicians this is all about - the players & the instruments we want to play & enjoy.

Fender couldn't give less of a fuck, because they think they don't have to.

Took a look back at Reddit today. I walked away after the whole API/IPO thing; the increasing levels of censorship and banning by mods and admins was another big factor.

I dare say that my leaving was a real (if small) loss for Reddit, although I doubt anyone noticed. I brought something that no one else had: my extensive knowledge of old books. For example, when it comes to fantasy I saw a million recommendations for Brian Sanderson, but I was the ONLY Redditor recommending Lord Dunsany, Stephen Brust, Lawrence Watt-Evans, or even Roger Zelazny—among others. I made a huge number of relatively unique book recommendations there, and got some very complimentary thank-you's because of it.

Luckily I started saving copies of all those recommendations fairly early on, so I now have a document with about 1,000 of them. That's the basis for the daily book recommendations I've been doing here, with expansions and improvements.

I •did• make one expedition back to Reddit when I had an urgent question. The responses were so toxic that it confirmed my decision to abandon Reddit for good.

Quick explanation: I'm talking about my primary account. I have a secondary account for dating purposes only; online dating services are purely money-grabs, but R4R posts are the one way I know of to find at least •some• possibilities when it comes to dating (another reason why I strongly believe that we need a Fediverse dating alternative). But I use that account only for R4R posts and chatting with the women I meet that way.

Anyway, I got curious and took a look at general posts on Reddit today. They seemed odd, somehow. Suddenly I realized something: the posts were weirdly repetitive. Just the same sort of content over and over. Nothing creative. Nothing interesting. Just the same memes and the same "remember this?" posts with minor variations. Endless karma-whoring.

Why?

I'm guessing it reflects the essential change in Reddit that sprang from the IPO and the increased crackdown on freedom of expression. It's a prison camp; a well-disguised one, so far, but a prison camp nonetheless.

I picked the right time to leave.

@wendinoakland @Nickiquote Exactly that.

You subscribe. But it's only $1.

And then you either forget to cancel in time, or get lost in the dark patterns they've put up around their cancellation process and give up.

Or, best of all for them, you just forget about it and don't check your bank statements regularly.

Then it automatically renews, and you pay the next month's subscription out of your account.

Ideally for them, it's many months before you notice. By then, you've been paying the automatically renewing subscription for months or years.

Just another example of the #enshittification of everything.
