Took a look back at Reddit today. I walked away after the whole API/IPO thing; the increasing levels of censorship and banning by mods and admins was another big factor.
I dare say that my leaving was a real (if small) loss for Reddit, although I doubt anyone noticed. I brought something that no one else had: my extensive knowledge of old books. For example, when it comes to fantasy I saw a million recommendations for Brian Sanderson, but I was the ONLY Redditor recommending Lord Dunsany, Stephen Brust, Lawrence Watt-Evans, or even Roger Zelazny—among others. I made a huge number of relatively unique book recommendations there, and got some very complimentary thank-you's because of it.
Luckily I started saving copies of all those recommendations fairly early on, so I now have a document with about 1,000 of them. That's the basis for the daily book recommendations I've been doing here, with expansions and improvements.
I •did• make one expedition back to Reddit when I had an urgent question. The responses were so toxic that it confirmed my decision to abandon Reddit for good.
Quick explanation: I'm talking about my primary account. I have a secondary account for dating purposes only; online dating services are purely money-grabs, but R4R posts are the one way I know of to find at least •some• possibilities when it comes to dating (another reason why I strongly believe that we need a Fediverse dating alternative). But I use that account only for R4R posts and chatting with the women I meet that way.
Anyway, I got curious and took a look at general posts on Reddit today. They seemed odd, somehow. Suddenly I realized something: the posts were weirdly repetitive. Just the same sort of content over and over. Nothing creative. Nothing interesting. Just the same memes and the same "remember this?" posts with minor variations. Endless karma-whoring.
Why?
I'm guessing it reflects the essential change in Reddit that sprang from the IPO and the increased crackdown on freedom of expression. It's a prison camp; a well-disguised one, so far, but a prison camp nonetheless.
I picked the right time to leave.
