When you find yourself about to say, "I #believe…", stop and think.

Applying #logicalReasoning to #empiricalEvidence leads to a conclusion that you 'accept', not one that you 'believe'.

Belief requires no #evidence or #reasoning, only faith in the messenger.

If you can #believe something that just happens to be true, then you can just as readily believe something that is false.

Do you 'accept' —as far as the evidence and reason lead— or do you not accept?

Having accepted, review regularly.

Why do people like me (us?) put #empiricalEvidence, #criticalThinking, and #logicalReasoning at the heart of our decision making?

Because we know from #experience that it works.

But we still have to 'believe' that past experience is a good predictor of future outcome.

Ultimately, all systems must be based upon one or more #postulates.

I posit three more:

* all people matter to the same order of magnitude as our own people

* the #future matters more than the present

* #kindness

What I want from #YourParty

* Gather #EmpiricalEvidence

* Apply #CriticalThinking to ensure the #evidence is not misleading

* Apply #LogicalReasoning to the evidence to draw sound conclusions

* Stir in a large dose of #Kindness

* Now form the #policies

Yes 😀 We throw the word 'believe' around because it's a common term. But, for those of us for whom our basis is #EmpiricalEvidence / #LogicalReasoning , we should perhaps use a word like 'accept'.

I 'accept' the conclusions of science.

People do 'choose' to believe religion, in the same way that people choose to drink alcohol — it's comforting.

Similarly, people choose to accept the nonsense spouted by Farage or Trump — it appeals to their deep rooted prejudices.

The debate between rationalism and empiricism centers on whether knowledge is primarily gained through reason or experience. Rationalists argue for the role of reason in acquiring knowledge beyond sensory experience, while empiricists emphasize the importance of experience, including both senses and reflection. However, many philosophers exhibit traits of both perspectives, complicating the distinction.

In “The Demon-Haunted World” by Carl Sagan, the “Dragon in My Garage” allegory illustrates the importance of skepticism and empirical evidence. Sagan presents a scenario where someone claims to have a dragon in their garage but provides excuses to avoid any examination. This story emphasizes the necessity of critical thinking, the burden of proof, and the dangers of accepting claims without evidence.

There is an objective & subject reality. However, fundamentally, the subjective is #physics (objective).

How we perceive rock (e.g., a mountain) is subjective reality. However, whilst a person may understand more or less about what rock is (e.g., Elements), our perspective, our knowledge or belief, doesn't change the objective character of the rock.

The rock is an object. The universe is an object. We are people (subjective sentient objects).
