Two forms of “intelligence”: The real question is not Are they intelligent? But What kind of intelligence are we delegating and what happens to our own judgment when we do? #AI #LLM #Epistemology

Alexander Lerchner, The Abstraction Fallacy: Why AI Can Simulate But Not Instantiate Consciousness - PhilArchive

Computational functionalism dominates current debates on AI consciousness. This is the hypothesis that subjective experience emerges entirely from abstract causal topology, regardless of the underlying physical substrate. We argue this view ...

Zwei Formen von „Intelligenz“:

Menschen urteilen über Wahrnehmung, Erfahrung, Emotion und Reflexion.
LLMs über Tokenisierung, Mustererkennung und Statistik.

Die Ergebnisse können ähnlich wirken.
Die Prozesse sind fundamental verschieden.

Die entscheidende Frage ist nicht:
Sind sie intelligent?

Sondern:
Welche Art von Intelligenz delegieren wir gerade.
Und: Verlieren wir dabei unsere eigene Urteilskraft?

Between propaganda and "A.I.," #epistemology seems to be a dying skill 😕

Why Smart People Believe Obviously Wrong Things

Intelligence doesn't protect you from motivated reasoning—it makes you better at it.

Certainty Isn't Truth

Most people mistake the feeling of being certain for actually being right about something.

I’m also interested in general epistemology ( #epistemology), ontology ( #ontology), and philosophy of education (#philosophyofeducation).

As for cinema ( #cinema), I’m passionate about B-movies and Kieślowski, and I enjoy discovering all kinds of films.

Hi Mastodon! I'm Pascal and new to Mastodon. I'm a computer engineer and a researcher in operations research. I'm a (fairly) strong advocate for #openSource and #openScience. I'm interested in many topics but mostly #sustainability #privacy #lowtech #epistemology.

I'm a bit of a #typesetting nerd, so I use #LaTeX (or #TeX), and #Typst. I maintain two Typst packages: glossarium and algorithmic.

I have some free time before my next work contract starts, so I have been slowly going through my personal projects backlog...

Looking forward to meet people here!

Sometimes we have the chance to re-assess our understanding of the world, and we have to be very careful to put what we think we know into perspective. The article below describes such a chance, to get a better understanding of the boundary between what we know as the Ediacaran and the Cambrian world. If such a boundary even exists.

Clarity is often treated like a formatting tool - something that makes ideas easier, faster, more digestible.

But what if that’s not what we need?

This piece is about a different kind of clarity.

Not the kind that simplifies , but the kind that helps us stay oriented when things are complex, noisy, and moving fast.

It’s about learning how to see, not just how to consume.
