Just bought #elementaryOS to give it a try. Not sure if it will become my daily driver but I do love and want to support the effort put into the delivery of a polished UI design, something where most other distributions fall a bit short.

elementary OS 8.1: Secure Session wird Standard

Die Linux-Distribution mit macOS-Flair erhält ARM64-Support, fraktionale Skalierung und über 1.100 bearbeitete Issues elementary OS versteht sich als durchdachter, leistungsfähiger und ethischer Ersatz für Windows und macOS. Die auf Ubuntu basierende Distribution setzt auf die hauseigene Desktop-Umgebung Pantheon mit einer an macOS angelehnten Oberfläche. Das Projekt legt Wert auf konsistentes Design, Datenschutz und Barrierefreiheit, zugänglich für Einsteiger, aber ohne Abstriche für erfahrene Nutzer. Die Finanzierung erfolgt über ein Pay-what-you-can-Modell beim Download und einen kuratierten App Store. Mit Version 8.1 liefert das Team um Gründerin Danielle Foré nun das erste größere Update nach dem im November 2024 erschienenen elementary OS 8. Im Fokus stehen die Weiterentwicklung der Wayland-basierten Secure Session, erweiterte Hardware-Unterstützung und zahlreiche Verbesserungen auf Basis von Nutzer-Feedback. Die Entwickler haben seit dem Release von elementary OS 8 über 1.100 gemeldete Issues abgearbeitet, davon 72 Prozent Bugfixes, 18 Prozent neue Funktionen sowie 10 Prozent Technical Debt und Code-Qualität. Secure Session als neuer Standard Die wichtigste Änderung betrifft die Standardsitzung: Die mit elementary OS 8 eingeführte Secure Session löst nun die Classic Session als Voreinstellung ab. Die Secure Session basiert auf Wayland und soll durch strikte Isolation zwischen Anwendungen mehr Privatsphäre und Sicherheit bieten. Anwendungen können beispielsweise nicht mehr ohne Weiteres auf die Zwischenablage oder Bildschirminhalte anderer Programme zugreifen. In der Secure Session erhält auch die Passwort-Authentifizierung eine zusätzliche Schutzfunktion: Öffnet sich ein Authentifizierungsdialog, wird der restliche Bildschirm abgedunkelt und andere Fenster können den Fokus nicht mehr stehlen. Das soll verhindern, dass Nutzer versehentlich ihr Passwort in ein falsches Fenster eingeben. Wer weiterhin die X11-basierte Classic Session benötigt, etwa wegen bestimmter Anwendungen oder Hardware, kann diese weiterhin beim Login auswählen. Die Entwickler haben zudem Probleme behoben, die beim Wechsel zwischen beiden Sitzungstypen auftraten. Neue AppArmor-Profile sollen außerdem Sandbox-Probleme mit Flatpak-Anwendungen beheben, die insbesondere bei Steam und im Gastsitzungsmodus auffielen. Das Dock wird zur Schaltzentrale Das mit elementary OS 8 eingeführte Dock erhält umfangreiche Erweiterungen. Nutzer hatten nach dem Wechsel vom älteren Plank-Dock einige Funktionen vermisst, die nun zurückkehren: Mehrere Punkte zeigen wieder an, wenn eine Anwendung mehrere Fenster geöffnet hat. Die Farbe der Punkte unterscheidet zwischen Fenstern auf dem aktuellen und anderen Arbeitsflächen. Beim Drag-and-Drop über ein App-Symbol lässt sich wieder durch die offenen Fenster dieser Anwendung wechseln. Neu ist Pressure Reveal: Die Funktion verhindert, dass das Dock versehentlich erscheint, wenn der Mauszeiger am unteren Bildschirmrand Bedienelemente einer Anwendung ansteuert. Neu hinzugekommen ist ein Workspace-Switcher direkt im Dock. Nutzer können neue Arbeitsflächen anlegen, zwischen ihnen wechseln und sie per Drag-and-Drop umsortieren. Ein Klick auf die bereits aktive Arbeitsfläche öffnet die Multitasking-Ansicht, was das Auffinden von Fenstern mit der Maus vereinfacht. Anwendungen lassen sich aus dem Dock direkt in der Multitasking-Ansicht starten, was das Einrichten von Arbeitsflächen beschleunigt. Das Dock bleibt nun auch in der Multitasking-Ansicht sichtbar. Das Dock zeigt nun auch Hintergrund-Anwendungen an, die ohne sichtbares Fenster laufen, etwa Musikplayer oder Synchronisationsdienste. Diese Funktion nutzt das Background Portal von Freedesktop.org und zeigt den vom Entwickler angegebenen Grund für die Hintergrundaktivität an. Nutzer können Hintergrund-Apps direkt beenden und in den Systemeinstellungen festlegen,

Trying out ElementaryOS and the keyboard hurts. I also miss the menu bar. But I’ve already been busy using evremap to bring some comfort back to my hands. I started out with the left option/alt key to let me type my special characters (I manually select my curly quotes…among others) and switching to using the right key just feels more contorted, but found myself going all out since I’m using a VM.

Needed to install git. 😅 Maybe I’d be better off with a distro having more configuration out of the box, but I did appreciate having some control for keyboard commands (as a long term Mac user with a lot of text nav experience, some behavior was confusing (I’m doing all kinds of fancy things when I’m just trying to get around a paragraph. 😆

I’ve invested time (and money 😌) into this experiment, so I guess I’ll keep going.

It’s funny. With years of web server management, I’m much more at home in the terminal. Is this why there’s diehard command line folks? 😅

@danirabbit …I never succeeded installing it on my retired MacBook Pro (T2), however, and I searched my way to https://t2linux.org plus Pantheon, but I’d rather use #elementaryOS.

So here’s a question, if I may: is it possible to (somewhat easily) install 8.1 on this machine, or what would you recommend me do to? Do you know of any sources that can help me through the process?

I have decided my next video will be about @elementary

I have enjoyed using it for the past week since learning they refuse to allow any AI code. I have since learned about their founder and that the team behind Elementary OS is very positive to the LGBTQIA+ community and very anti-fascist.

I think I will make two videos, at a minimum. First, I will show how how easy it is to install. Then show what it is like to use it. Perhaps I could install some applications, go through the unique GUI applications they have created for newer users, and maybe even experiment with installing another desktop environment.

If you have any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it!

Okay, so elementary OS 8.1 is installed on my laptop and I'm gonna try and see if I can use the web browser the web browser that comes with elementary, which is Epiphany, aka GNOME Web, as my main. I have a feeling it's gonna be rather complicated but I want to give it a real shot.

If @elementary or anyone else has any piece of advice to give, I'd love to hear it.
