I noticed something in the #DnD5E14 Players Handbook that I think should be changed, but since I don't have the #DnD5E24 PHB, I'm not sure if they addressed it or not.

Fighters get class proficiency in STR and CON saving throws. I play a DEX Fighter with Finesse Weapons. I think it makes sense to allow a Fighter to pick either STR or DEX, depending on their fighting style. As a DM, I would allow that, as a choice at character creation time.

My issues with #DnD go all the way back to 1974, most importantly the class-based PC development system and the Vancian magic system, both of which I detest as limiting and illogical. Neither #DnD5E14 nor #DnD5E24 change these.

There are definitely better ways to do these, for someone like me who falls squarely in the RP (roleplaying) camp, as opposed to the G (gaming) camp of #RPGs.

I've preferred skills-based systems at least since discovering #LegendMUD in the 90s.

Ultimately, my feeling about #DnD is that it's more or less the lingua franca. If I had a choice of any #TTRPG to play, D&D would not be my personal choice; however, because it's what most people know, it's easy to fall into a game.

I think #DnD5E24 is a victim of the success of #DnD5E14. It has tried to be all things to all players inside a system that has "good bones" (compared with previous editions), but in the process of productization by Hasbro, has become too codified and too complex.

Here is the Spell Points system I created for #DnD5E in 2021. It's a direct drop-in replacement for Spell Slots.

1. The maximum spell level a character can cast is equal to one-half their caster level, rounded up. This results in access to higher spell levels at the same caster levels as D&D5e. A caster must reach Level 17 to cast a 9th Level spell.

I appreciate that #Hasbro #WotC decided this time, in the #DnD5E24 SRD 5.2, to include the Feats, instead of leaving them to the PHB.

However, I still feel that a class-based PC development system is an impediment, and that #DnD could easily be converted to a classless system by simply converting all class features to Feats that all PCs can choose.

I also still think that a Spell Points system is better than Spell Slots, and it's easy to convert Slots to Points. #TTRPG #TRPG #gaming
