There was #DivestOS made for devices that were no longer "in support" but apparently that project got canceled at the start of the year.

My brain is just going crazy that the #USGov is gonna come after me by subpoenaing my data from google, even though I have long since turned all privacy-sharing settings off on my phone.

These older devices may not be the most powerful, but they still can be useful, especially for those without access to better phones.

#smartphone #android

Now that #DivestOS is gone and #Carrion is dead, what are other #android users using to block spam calls? Strong preference for FOSS.

#grapheneos

@visone

Yes, it's the continuation of the Mull browser from the sadly now defunct #DivestOS project.

Seitdem #DivestOS eingestampft wurde, finde ich keinen gescheiten Antivirus mehr via F-Droid. Brauch ich das bei #GrapheneOS nicht?

Holy crap. #DivestOS shutdown?! I wasn't using them directly because I had #grapheneos available on my pixel, but I used #Mull and Carion. What are the alternatives now? I see IronFox in Accrescent. Is it comparable?

I have bought a Pixel phone 2 years ago specifically to install #GrapheneOS on it. It's still there, but I'm reconsidering it.

It has been known that GOS had a toxic relationship with outside people/projects. Despite the departure of the original developer and the main culprit, this direction has not changed. The official face of GOS (i.e., their socials) routinely engage in unconstructive keyboard battles that I can't help but believe they have a people dedicated to micromanaging their online reputation.

The thing is, I believe what they are saying is mostly correct, if not entirely so. I believe they have a deep understanding of the Android security system and I am aware they have made direct contributions to AOSP itself. I like the sandboxed Play Store approach; it gives the best of both worlds both in privacy/security and app compatibility, and wish that other projects could adopt or copy them.

The problem arises when their philosophy is an all or nothing approach. If you take only their words you will come to believe that positively nothing below the recent Pixel with GOS is safe. There are a lot of people to whom this approach is simply impractical (Pixel 9 series is only available in 32 countries), and GrapheneOS' answer to it is basically "too bad." They do not see the value in harm reduction, or even other endeavours not related to security. Their response to the discontinuation of #DivestOS (an Android ROM project that also focused on increasing security, based on LineageOS) was that it was insecure to begin with, arguing future endeavours should base it off their code instead. Their hubris is, quite frankly, hard to ignore.

I've been using GOS for years and am still fine. If you want to try it I don't believe there will be any harm; the product itself is immaculate and ticks almost all of my boxes. But to quote someone who also jumped off of GOS ship, "you can be right and still be an asshole."

PS. Please don't be mean in the replies and throw around words like 'fabricated' or 'smear campaign' if you aren't going to present a substantial evidence. It only reinforces my negative impression.

@feudjais Yeah, I came from #DivestOS where this was a thing and was surprised there's no option in #LineageOS.

Je suis repassé-e sous LineageOS puisque DivestOS c'est terminé. Ben je suis bien deg. 😬
