Let's talk irony in the ttrpg space - specifically, the digital side.

D&D Beyond is supposed to the *the* home of D&D on the internet. You can buy books there, set up campaigns, if you have a subscription you can share those books, etc. It's Wizards' thing to try to centralize the whole kit and kaboodle. (DDB didn't start out as owned by wizards - it was licensed. They bought it out in 2022 and made it their own. - https://www.dndbeyond.com/posts/1221-d-d-beyond-joins-wizards-of-the-coast )

There's a caveat to that, though - and it's called Roll20. One of the biggest places to run games online, with a virtual tabletop and all that. Wizards actually licenses D&D there, and you can buy D&D books on there to to use the books with the game.

(Fun fact: Wizards has been trying *very* to make headway in this space, at least where D&D is concerned. See their Maps VTT, and its predecessor the now-dead Sigil 3d vtt.)

This is where the irony comes in - Roll20 bought out another digital distribution platform called Demiplane, which serves a whole bunch of other games, and used to do only third party 5e content as well... until very recently. Remember, Roll20 owns them. ...and now Demiplane is hosting a small subset of the D&D books, including the big three core books, using official D&D trademarks and such because hey, it's all licensed, I guess?

The long and short is the D&D Beyond for a bunch of other big games has semi-accidentally started hosting D&D official content as well. Considering Demiplane started hosting books after hiring on a few former DDB folks... well.

Irony.

Someone at Wizards has to be incredibly irritated by this twist.

I am not sure what the deal is with roll20 linking up with demiplane to provide some character sheets? I was sort of interested in testing out Starfinder 2e. I was a little shocked that there is some kind of demiplane connection to do that now.

https://www.demiplane.com/launch

I find filling out the options for Starfinder 2e cumbersome, but I am old and a complainer. I kind of wish there was a character generator that just asked a series of questions like...

Do you like to fighting, sneaking, healing, or magic?

Is your character strong, smart, or agile?

And so on...

Maybe a bit like how a gypsy would ask you a series of questions in Ultima to determine what your class was going to be.

Demiplane has a whole section on “5e”

I ASSUME this means D&D 5e? Because they sure don’t say that.

Back to character creation for #Fallout2d20. I played around a bit with the #Demiplane character creature, which is nifty BUT requires me to pay approx. $30 for the tool set.

Which I get, but ... not that's not in the budget for this month (especially since I just ordered the print version of the rules. #TTRPG

The final act of Return of the Ripper is a kind of #heroquest across a #mythical desert #demiplane to reach the Tomb of the Sea Queen.

I am drawing on #Zoroastrian and #Persian #myths to populate the demiplane. I was delighted to find this amazing and useful site "1001 Mythical Creatures of #Iranian Cultures and Beyond". Worth taking a look just for the beautiful #illustrations.

"I get it -- they need to make money too"

Do they? I paid their monthly fee. I'm not sure what it's supposed to get, but it sure isn't access to the full content. They said that I had to buy the full game.

To compare, Board Game Arena charges the exact same monthly, but
1) you do NOT have to buy anything else to play any of their games
2) in fact, only one person per play has to have an account

And what does #Demiplane provide? Something that I could put into Google Forms?

I didn't realize #DemiPlane was so slow until I just created a sample PC for #DaggerHeart.

A lot of the content is only available as a purchase unfortunately (I get it -- they need to make money too).

#TTRPG

I escaped the #ArchMage 's #DemiPlane just in time to warn them the #FriendlyOldWizard in the Tavern was leading them into a trap, and a #WanderingPaladin was able to #LayOnHands. Mind you that was the end of his adventuring career, after that he wandered around warning people about said #ArchMage.

TTRPG grumbling:

While I'm not generally a fan of D&D beyond's app, one thing I rather appreciate about it is the fact that I can just... Download all the books I own for totally offline access. There is a storage price to be paid for this, naturally, but I can accept that.

Compare this to Demiplane which uses a web interface exclusively. No native app, and definitely no offline access.

I would say "I expected better of them", but apparently they were bought out around this time last year by Roll20 (fun fact: so was drivethrurpg) and Roll20 has a history of either having awful apps or no apps at all, so I suppose I really shouldn't be surprised, but it's a little frustrating.

Please don't make me say "Wizards does this better" eternally?
