#DeathCamas are in their early bloom stage. Only one specialized miner bee can feed upon it - it's toxic to other pollinators, herbivores & human consumption. Gorgeous native plant but it is deadly if eaten.

Digesting Food Studies—Episode 105: Indigenous Food Sovereignty

Although Indigenous food sovereignty has been attacked and eroded by multiple histories of colonial oppression, rebuilding it can happen—through intergenerational learning, land-based practices, and relationality.

Kaylee Michnik, talks about her article, “Moving Your Body, Soul, and Heart to Share and Harvest Food” from Vol. 8, No. 2 of Canadian Food Studies (https://doi.org/10.15353/cfs-rcea.v8i2.446), including the roles we all play in reconciliation & decolonization. Courtney Vaughan offers a response to the text and its challenges. Starting it off is Alexia Moyer’s account of the tasty and tenuous history of camas cultivation by Coast Salish peoples.

#DeathCamas - all parts of plant are #toxic & shouldn't be handled. Only bee that can tolerate its toxins is the specialist mining bee. Toxic to animals, especially sheep. Humans have been poisoned after ingesting bulbs; kids have been poisoned after ingesting flowers & flower buds.

A pretty flower with a fearsome name: Death Camas.

Toxicoscordion venenosum (aka Zigadenus venenosus) is toxic, even to most insects. The copper-winged bee perched on top is a Death Camas Miner Bee (Andrena astragali), which feeds almost exclusively on #DeathCamas and is able to survive the experience!

Anticlea elegans the Mountain Death Camas, or the elegant Camas. This poisonous plant is stronger than strychnine.
It's all over the western US and Canada outside of California. It can be mistaken for edible bulbs or onions and it can cause heart rhythm problems and convulsions. So steer clear!
