The Norwegian Crown Prince Haakon has expressed deep concern about the health of his wife, Princess Mette-Marit, who suffers from a severe, chronic, and incurable lung disease. According to statements made to journalists by the prince, the princess’s health condition had significantly deteriorated over the past months.

“The princess is seriously ill, and I have observed a significant worsening of her condition recently,” Haakon stated, adding, “I am deeply concerned about her health. She uses supplemental oxygen daily, which offers her partial relief, but certainly does not represent a definitive or fully satisfactory solution.”

The 52-year-old Crown Prince wanted to make the situation public, revealing his anxiety about the condition of his wife, a figure beloved by the Norwegian population.

Mette-Marit was diagnosed in 2018 with a rare form of pulmonary fibrosis that causes breathing difficulties, forcing her to repeatedly take sick leave or reduce her official engagements. The princess was recently seen in public with a device to help her breathe: a nasal cannula, consisting of a tube connected to an oxygen therapy apparatus, carried by a palace employee. In December, the palace announced that the princess might need a lung transplant. Mette-Marit, who married Haakon in 2001, has endured a difficult period under the spotlight in recent months.

In January, documents were made public revealing her friendship and frequent contacts with Jeffrey Epstein, the well-known convicted sex offender in the United States, dating between 2011 and 2014. Further complicating the situation is the matter involving her son Marius Borg Høiby, born from a previous relationship: the young man was brought to trial at the beginning of this year on charges of rape, charges he firmly denies. The verdict is expected for June 15th.
