The #UK and #Malaysia have strengthened cooperation on sustainable transport through the inaugural UK-Malaysia Green #Transport Dialogue in Kuala Lumpur on 10–11 February 2026. Organised by the British High Commission, Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport and the Malaysia Rail Development Corporation, the event brought together policymakers and industry leaders to discuss policy, planning, technology and best practice in low-carbon transport. UK representatives, including experts from Transport for #London, #Crossrail International and Connected Places Catapult, shared experience in multimodal networks, rail development and urban planning. The initiative supports Malaysia’s ambition to expand electrified, integrated public transport and forms part of the UK’s Green Cities, #Infrastructure and Energy Programme.

In 1993 the #UK Prime Minister John Major allowed the #Crossrail Bill to proceed to Second Reading on the condition that urgent cost savings were examined. Parallel reviews by operators and Department of #Transport consultants reassessed costs, which rose from £1.7bn to about £2.7bn by late 1993. Nearly half of core costs related to five central #London stations, prompting proposals to reduce station numbers, sizes and tunnel specifications. Operators estimated a benefit–cost ratio of 1.4–1.7, while consultants were more cautious, often near or below 1.0. At the same time, government oversaw the Channel Tunnel Rail Link competition. A dispute arose when GEC refused joint and several liability on confidentiality, leading to its withdrawal from the Eurorail consortium. Between 2009–2011, #TfL assessed 64 potential #Crossrail 2 route options, combining sub-options across three key segments: the central core, north-east, and south-west. These included historic routes like the Chelsea–Hackney line, regional and express rail concepts, fully automated metro systems, and more affordable alternatives. One such option was the City Tram—proposed to run from Highbury & Islington to Brixton via Shoreditch, Liverpool Street, and London Bridge—designed to offer local connectivity at lower cost. The 1991 safeguarded route was used as a benchmark throughout the analysis. Each option was assessed against a range of strategic, environmental, operational, and financial criteria. TfL then consolidated the 64 options into 29 representative schemes for more detailed evaluation. Full maps, route details, and scoring assessments were made available on request.
