Said Robert Proctor: “If you don’t like the science that’s out there, create some of your own. And then claim ‘we need more research.’ And then label your opposition as a bunch of close-minded fanatics.”

How Industry Weaponizes Science and Sows Doubt to Serve Their Agenda

“When you’re shining a light on something, almost everything else remains in the dark. And sometimes that darkness is deliberately kept dark.”

What are your favorite empirical works that do a good or nuanced job of connecting meaning and materiality in the same study?

What is scandalous today and what dynamics can be unleashed online to pull users into a #scandal? In this new article, we analyzed a feud between Andrew #Tate and Greta #Thunberg as a case of "self-scandalization" in which outraged #audiences affectively contribute to cross-platform attention for polarizing figures. This is the first publication from our project "EXPOSING: The Public Value of Socio-Mediated Scandals in the Digital Age". https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/13675494251329722

"There are several overlapping groups of people who, probably for different reasons, are more likely to prefer news that shares their point of view:
(a) the ideological and politically engaged;
(b) young people, especially those who rely mainly on social media for news;
(c) women; and
(d) less socioeconomically advantaged groups."

"In markets dominated by fewer brands — often publicly funded ones such as the BBC — respondents in that market also tend to express higher levels of preference for impartiality." In Britain, where respondents use an average of four news brands, the lowest number across the 40 countries studied, 62% of respondents say they prefer news displaying no point of view.
