In #Carboniferous, global #forests appeared, covering #tropical zones with tree-high #horsetails, #clubmosses, and #ferns. #Oxygen levels rose, and #CO2 was bound for transforming peat into lignite and #bituminous #coal. The climate later became colder i.a. due to the decreasing greenhouse gas leading to the Permo-Carboniferous Ice Age period.

Plants struggled for millions of years after the world's worst climate catastrophe
https://phys.org/news/2025-03-struggled-millions-years-world-worst.html

"#conifers were some of the earliest to colonize the land after the End-#Permian catastrophe. But the recovery of #forests was not smooth sailing... even higher temperatures during the Late Smithian Thermal Maximum caused the collapse of these survivors... they were replaced by tough, shrubby #plants resembling modern #clubmosses. This scorching period lasted for about 700,000 years"

Plants struggled for millions of years after the world's worst climate catastrophe, scientists reveal

A team of scientists from University College Cork (UCC), the University of Connecticut, and the Natural History Museum of Vienna have uncovered how plants responded to catastrophic climate changes 250 million years ago.

Have thrown my lower back horribly and currently unable to get out of bed without 4 classes of analgesia and a walking-stick, but this little spikemoss arrived today so I can’t be sad 🥰 She’s so beautiful.

Too many clubmosses, I am told. I don’t understand. I have less than 1% of them, which seems a very modest sample to me.

#FossilAdventCalendar Day 3

We're jumping to the #Maritimes today to celebrate one of #Canada's 🇨🇦 most important #fossil sites. #NovaScotia's #JogginsFossilCliffs are a window into the #Carboniferous, a period that saw the spread of a new #biome: #forests. This #fossilized #tree on display at the #RoyalOntarioMuseum is a #lycopsid, a super-sized relative of living #ClubMosses that, along with #cycads, #ferns, and early relatives of #seed #plants, made up the #flora of the #Joggins #forest.

Lepidodendron yorkianum from the Carboniferous (from #BritishGeologicalSurvey R.L. Kidston photo collection). Looking similar to one of today's clubmosses http://geoscenic.bgs.ac.uk/asset-bank/action/viewAsset?id=63645

Clubmosses - related to the fossil lepidodendron in the previous post. 300 million years between them and found within a few hundred yards of each other! #clubmosses. They are not a true moss (Bryophyte)
Did you know that you can use #Mastodon to talk about stuff you like and are interested in, not just for commenting on stuff you didn't like elsewhere and that you might be moving on from 🐤? I like #plants (esp. #clubmosses and #ferns) and #insects and #fungi and #ciliates and #spiders. I love being ever more at the messy end of #gay #LGBTQIA #queer, and I like being here because I want to be more *myself* rather than putting on yet another performance for yet another audience.
