Selaginella wallacei (Wallace's spikemoss) is one of the more common plants I most like to spot in the wild. A member of the lycophytes, this spore-bearing plant is part of the oldest group of vascular plants, with members represented in the fossil record as early as 425 million years ago.

This is Selaginella uncinata, a lycophte that can sometimes be found in the horticulture trade, particularly among plants sold for terrarium or vivarium use. Sometimes called ferns or mosses, they are technically neither; lycophytes are a sister clade to all other vascular plants, and their lineage includes some famous fossil trees and plants from hundreds of millions of years ago, like Lepidodendron and Pleuromeia.
