ByteDance and Broadcom have joined forces to develop a new AI processor amidst US-China tech tensions. This strategic partnership aims to secure a consistent supply of high-quality chips, with production by TSMC.
TSMC's Arizona plant, currently being equipped by TSMC in the US, should start producing chips on a large scale by 2024. The fabrication of massive integrated circuits is set to begin in 2025, but the company faces challenges in finding the qualified personnel needed. According to Fortune, TSMC's corporate culture is described as 'brutal', and many American employees are reportedly hesitant about the long working hours and rotating shifts. However, the reason for the delay in starting chip production at the Arizona plant is not only the labor issues. The local government is also facing difficulties in creating the legal framework required for the semiconductor plant to move forward. TSMC has faced similar issues with its executives and the local government in Japan being less fluid, despite the need for the company to increase its fabrication capacity for integrated circuits within the US. In addition, construction costs in the US are higher than in Taiwan, and the availability of US companies to collaborate with TSMC for the plant is not as great as in Taiwan or Europe. The TSMC plant under construction in Kumamoto, Japan, is making progress, with the inaugural ceremony for the first phase of the plant set to take place in early February.
