1. API prices can be volatile
2. OpenAI and Anthropic IPOs are likely. Post-IPO the prices will change
3. There is no guarantee of a prolonged Chinese contribution to open-weight models. Once DeepSeek reaches a full Chinese AI vertical, they don't need to remain 40x cheaper. They can increase the price as well.
4. Currently the main reason Anthropic and OpenAI get that much traction is that they reside in a compliant economic zone (USA)
Qwen 3.7 Max from Alibana is proprietary. There are open-weight Qwen models, but the flagship / frontier models don't have an obligation to be open-weight.
Given the marketing and AI adoption experiences (real-world AI in business struggles), the investment into a self-hosted HW setup may not be viable in most cases.

On Thursday, April 23, Meta cut 8,000 jobs and Microsoft offered buyouts to roughly 8,750 more. Both cited AI. Neither was losing money. Microsoft’s program is the first voluntary buyout in its 51-year history, eligibility set by a “rule of 70” — age plus tenure must reach seventy, capped at senior director level, with notifications going out May 7. Meta’s chief people officer Janelle Gale told staff in a memo obtained by Bloomberg that the cuts are “to offset the other investments we’re making.” Severance is 16 weeks plus two per year of service; effective date May 20. The company is also closing 6,000 unfilled roles, removing 14,000 headcount positions from its 2026 plan.
