"The French-speaking settlers who left the Acadian region of Canada for southwest Louisiana in 1764 became known as Cajuns. They brought their traditional ballads and fiddle tunes with them. Music was an essential part of social life among Cajuns at house parties, gatherings, and by the 1920s, at dancehalls. Over time, French-speaking African American Creoles also shared these music traditions. In the days before amplification or microphones, singers had to project their voices high and loud in order to be heard. Even after amplified sound was introduced in the mid-1930s, this characteristic singing style remained the standard among most traditional Cajun vocalists. Lyrics are still sung in French today. "Down-Home Music: The Story of Arhoolie Records" is on display, post-security, in Terminal 2. http://ow.ly/Xj1p50jCwCg" This was posted to our Instagram account on November 07, 2018 – https://millsfield.sfomuseum.org/instagram/1729357405/

"The Cajun story starts in #NovaScotia, where this French-speaking people led a peaceful life, until they didn't. In the middle of the 1700s, the conquering British kicked out the #Acadians — shortened to #Cajuns. Expelled, they found an improbable home amid the backwaters of #French #Louisiana."

Cajun and Zydeco music, the sounds of southwest Louisiana, are experiencing a remarkable revival

The marshy interior of southern Louisiana is home to a cuisine, language and sound all its own. Today, Cajun and Zydeco music, often sung in French, is enjoying a renaissance.

Additionally, the #NYTimes piece must have originally the phrase #Black #Cajun but removed it as a couple articles point to the NYT article for that descriptor. This is a good fix. #Cajuns have also been defined several ways over time but definitely never Black. Today, being perceived as Black is the surest way to be excluded from the possibility of identifying as Cajun.

I ride through the UL Lafayette athletic complex to and from work when I commute by #bike. Today I had to wait for about 150 #football players on the Ragin’ Cajuns to pass before I could continue. Geaux #Cajuns!
