Second day of our crossing of the alps on 1 September 2023. With a rough night and little sleep on the Kärlingerhaus behind us, it was hard to get going at first. But we soon did overcome the reluctance, had a wonderful hiking day with great conditions and a varying, impressive landscapes. After crossing the German-Austrian border and a small break at the Riemannhaus we descended to the small village of Maria Alm. By bus and train we reached Zell am See where we stayed the night.

First day of our crossing of the alps on 31 August 2023. After taking the elctric boat to St. Bartholomew's Church at the western shore of the Königssee we faced a steep incline through the Saugasse with 32 hairpin turns until we reached our first alpine hut, the Kärlingerhaus, at 1638 metres above sea level.

As promised in the last post I am going to start a little TBT series about my biggest hiking adventure so far:
In late summer 2023 my girlfriend and I crossed the Alps from Königssee near Berchtesgaden in Bavaria to Rifugio Auronzo below the world-renowned Tre Cime di Lavaredo.
Although some kilometers, especially from Lienz in East Tyrol to Sillian, were completed by taking the train, we hiked for 11 days straight.

Total length: 132 km
Total Ascent/Descent: 8650 m ↑ and 7275 m ↓

The day before we started with the hikes we arrived overly excited in Berchtesgaden after a 6 hour long train journey with the Deutschlandticket.

Because it was rather gray and rainy that day, we wouldn't have guessed that day how blessed we were going to be with great weather conditions during the next 11 days!

Mid July two years ago we've been on a weekend trip by train to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and were going to sleep in a mountain hut for the first time.
After a very bright and hot saturday on our way up to the Kreuzeckhaus, most of sunday was rather soupy and cold. The sun only came out once we were nearly back in town.

Lots of rain and thunderstorm on Thursday last week, so I delayed my departure from the Zillertal to have enough time for another adventure on Friday.

I got up early, took the train to Mayrhofen at 06:52 and transferred onto a bus via mountaineering village Ginzling to the Schlegeisspeicher where I started my hike at 08:30.

After roughly 70 walking minutes I reached the Olperer hut at 2388 metres above the Adriatic.
Afterwards my round trip, the Neumarkter Runde, continued over a ridge into a spacious cirque and back down again. Because there were far less people on this route than usual, it really was a an amazing atmosphere.

Before the bus back to Mayrhofen departed, I enjoyed a fast - but nevertheless delicious - meal at the Dominikushütte, where I also had a pleasant chat with the inn keeper.
