Let's continue where we stopped last week: still at the Stuttgarter Hütte, still day 2 of the Lechquellenrunde.
We listened to the inn keeper and split our tour in half as snow prevented us from taking the "normal" way through the Madlochjoch: First down to Zürs on the same route as yesterday and then we took the bus to Zug via Lech.
From there on it was all up again until we reached the Ravensburger Hütte at the Spullersee. The sun was strong during the second part and I sweated a lot.

Because we had to reroute again on the second day on our take on the Lechquellenrunde in June 2024, we started the day with an unplanned summit ascent.

From Stuttgarter Hütte it took us roughly an hour to reach the Fanggekarspitze (2640 m). Gladly the snow-covered path was already groomed.
While the weather on the hut was lovely, it got really cold, windy, grey and misty the higher we got. Sight distance was probly between 10 to 15 meters at the peak.

The hike towards the next hut (still day 2!) will be featured in another post next Thursday.

At the end of June 2024 we started a 6-day hut trekking tour, the Lechquellenrunde. Reservation problems at two huts forced us to change our original plan and follow the trail in reverse. After staying in Sankt Anton am Arlberg the days before, we reached our starting point, Lech-Zürs, by bus. From there it was a rather short hike up to the first hut, the Stuttgarter Hütte, which is situated at 2310 m right on the Tyrol side of the Tyrol-Vorarlberg border. Because the weather was really "meh" and we reached the hut at 10 o'clock in the morning, we had lots of time to chat with an employee of the hut, who studied in the same city as us.

All things must come to an end and so did our crossing of the Alps in 2023 with stage 11. On our way from Talschlusshütte to Dreizinnenhütte we didn't talk much as we soaked it all in and were both lost in thought about the past few days. Once we were getting closer to the Tre Cime di Lavaredo it got more and more crowded and we were a bit overwhelmed. After a pause at the hut - much longer than we anticipated, because it was so full - we left for the last part and the final destination. We crossed the imaginary finish line at Rifugio Auronzo and were received by our beloved ones.

It's been our greatest adventure yet and we absorbed so many unforgettable impressions.

Remember my post about day seven of our crossing of the Alps? Turns out, I probably became infected on Lienzer Hütte. My body temperature rose during the evening and I had to leave dinner early to change to an empty basement room at Sillianer Hütte. The night was hellish with little sleep. I felt a bit better the next morning, but still pretty weak. Fortunately, nearly all we had to do on stage 10 was descending to Italy during another warm day until we reached the Talschlusshütte in Fischlein valley at the edge of the Sexten Dolomites and I finally could recover a bit. Some wistfulness settled in this evening as the penultimate day of this amazing journey came to an end.

Ninth day of our crossing of the Alps and simultaneously the start of a little extension to the classical Berchtesgaden-Lienz route: From Sillian the only way was up till we reached Sillianer Hütte, which is situated exactly at the Austrian-Italian border. At the beginning we followed a forestry track. After we worked through roughly two thirds of this day's march we had lunch at Leckfeldalm where we were belted by many cows. There was also a change in scenery at Leckfeldalm. We left the woods behind us and continued on gravel through an area more open and rocky than before. We had some leisure time at the hut before I felt something happening in my body...but more on that next week when it's time for another ThrowbackThursday post.

Temperature rose to 30 °C before midday on day eight of our crossing of the Alps and although the hike was not really challenging, we sweated a lot. After a long way down from Wangenitzseehütte to Iselsberg, we took the bus to Lienz, had a stroll though the city, boarded an ÖBB CityShuttle and finally reached our final destination for this day: Sillian near the Austrian-Italian border.

A woman with two sick kids (fever and coughing) had to sleep in our dorm at Lienzer Hütte, because she couldn't descent further, so our sleep wasn't too restorative. Nevertheless we continued our adventure "crossing of the Alps" on day seven. After a diverting hike to the Wangenitzseehütte (2508 m), the highest situated Alpine hut in the Schober group, we attempted the climb to the top of Petzeck (3283 m) to finally get our first three-thousand-metre mountain done. However, rather sooner than later our concentration was used up, so with a heavy heart we turned around at roughly 2900 m, descended back down to the hut and took a swim in the cold lake.

Longest stage on day six of our crossing of the Alps. We hiked from Glorer Hütte (2651 m) via Peischlachtörl (2490 m), Gernot-Röhr-Biwak (2926 m), Elberfelder Hütte (2346 m) and Gößnitzscharte (2737 m) to Lienzer Hütte (1977 m) into the heart of the Schober group. As we knew beforehand that this day would be rather long, the discussion about climbing the Böses Weibl (3121 m) at the Gernot-Röhr-Biwak was settled quickly. We skipped it and the second chance to climb our first three-thousand-metre mountain went out the window. In hindsight this was not the wrong decision, because we then would have missed out on dinner at the Lienzer Hütte. We enjoyed watching different marmots along the way and even captured a decent photo of one.
