A Buff-banded Rail scratching about in the garden at work, no more than a metre away from someone sitting eating their lunch.

Campus birds are mostly ok with human presence, which makes for some fairly easy encounters.

While at a lunch meeting outside, we were visited by a curious Buff-banded Rail.

Continuing on the Damp Bird theme. A Welcome Swallow in the rain, and two Buff-banded Rails (of the four observed) also wandering about in the rain.

It should be noted, the photographer was also damp, 'cause holding an umbrella and wielding a 600mm lens are incompatible things to do at once.

Today's birds on campus are decidedly spring-themed.

We have a trio of Pied Currawong fledglings.
A parent Masked Lapwing dutifully sitting on eggs.
A Grey Butcherbird fledgling excitedly calling for food as its parent turns up to feed it.
And not following the theme, a Buff-banded Rail on the edge of the lake.

New additions on campus. Some Buff-banded Rail chicks have hatched and were out foraging with their parents.

While wandering to the office this morning, a Buff-banded Rail darted across my path, so I spent a few minutes stalking it.

Buff-banded Rail - Gallirallus philippensis

The buff-banded rail (Hypotaenidia philippensis) is a distinctively coloured, highly dispersive, medium-sized rail of the rail family, Rallidae. This species comprises several subspecies found throughout much of Australasia and the south-west Pacific region, including the Philippines (where it is known as tikling), New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand (where it is known as the banded rail, or Moho-pererū in Māori), and numerous smaller islands, covering a range of latitudes from the tropics to the subantarctic. My passion is wildlife photography, and I hope I can bring the beauty of nature into your home and show how amazing nature is. Every single animal needs our protection, as they all play an important part in our survival. There is an abundance of scientific reports telling us that the rate of extinction is alarming. More and more fauna and flora are going to disappear. With my wildlife photography, I hope to showcase a fraction of animals before they are gone. Only what you know, you will love and protect…

More campus birds.

A couple of sneaky Buff-banded Rails, and a small family of Australasian Swamphens (nee Purple Swamphens).

Also spotted on campus this morning, the bully of the parrot world, a Rainbow Lorikeet;
a Buff-banded Rail stalking through the undergrowth, and a Hardhead shaking a tailfeather.

A Buff-banded Rail just foraging next to a path at UQ today. Wasn’t too worried about people.
