The First #RepairCafé in #BosniaAndHerzegovina

12 March 2026

"The first Repair Café has opened in #Bosnia and #Herzegovina! Anida and Nerman, the initiators of #RepairCaféMostar, are giving this region a sustainable boost. 'We want to remove the barriers caused by fear and a lack of resources,' they said.

"Around Christmas last year, we received the happy news that we could welcome Repair Café Mostar: the first Repair Café in the #WesternBalkans. Anida Čmanjčanin and Nerman Turkić, the initiators, enthusiastically report on the grand opening and their intentions for the future.

Tradition and innovation go hand in hand!

"Thanks to support from the Federal Ministry of Education and Science and Repair Café International, the initiative kicked off with a festive launch. A workshop marathon attracted over 45 participants, including primary and secondary school pupils, as well as university students. Under the guidance of local experts, they learned various repair skills. These included #BicycleMaintenance, repairing #HouseholdAppliances, #textile #upcycling and #3DPrinting to replace broken plastic parts."

Found this in the bike shop and I have no idea what it goes to. Any ideas? Those are two different threaded rods on either end that can be adjusted separately.

My nemesis of bicycle maintenance is the snap ring. Every time I have to deal with a snap ring it's a multi-day pain while I struggle with it and give up and then struggle again and eventually I get lucky and I get the snap ring on.

Advice on the internet is of the "draw the rest of the fucking owl" variety.

More bike learnding! Successfully replaced the bottom bracket cartridge with £30 worth of parts and £13 worth of tools (I did have to buy and return the crank extractor and cassette before I got the right bits but who's counting).

Its all the more satisfying because I saved this bike from going to the tip and now with its new rear derailleur, chain, back wheel and bearings it rides like new!

Noob question for the #Bicycle community. I'm going to be providing motorcycle support for a bicycle event this weekend, and we've been asked to bring whatever relevant tools we have, to provide assistance fixing flats, etc.

I inherited a toolkit that contains spoke wrenches, bicycle-sized tire irons, a bazillion allen keys, and several tube patch kits. I know the tire irons will be useful, and I have my own set of metric allen wrenches, but I'm not sure about the spoke wrenches or the (probably pretty old) patch kits.

Are the spoke wrenches useful for roadside repair?

Would an old patch be adequate to get a bike to the end of the event, or useless, or worse than useless?

Any other good tools to have on board?

TIA

Bicycle Coalition of Maine -
Cross-sectional survey to investigate bicycle riders’ knowledge and experience of structural weakness in bicycles in Australia

Background Structural weakness may occur within bicycles (eg, during manufacture or impact) and may result in sudden failure and serious injuries. While some indicators of structural weakness may be detected by visual inspection, others require more advanced non-destructive tests. Available research is yet to adequately examine bicycle riders’ awareness and experience of the structural weakness in bicycles, or their knowledge and use of testing methods. Methods An online cross-section survey of 298 bicycle riders was conducted to address these knowledge gaps. Results 11.4% of respondents had experienced at least one crash that they suspected was due partly to structural weakness, with just over half resulting in injury and just under half involving costs greater than $A500. About 25% of respondents had a component replaced because of ‘failure during normal use’. More than one third did not think it was necessary to test for indicators or weaknesses when buying a used bicycle, or after a crash. Testing was most likely following motor vehicle collisions and for bicycles with carbon components. Visual inspection was the most reported form of testing and only 42% of respondents reported being aware of any non-destructive methods of testing. Discussion and conclusions 11.4% of respondents had experienced at least one crash that they suspected was due partly to structural weakness, with just over half resulting in injury and just under half involving costs greater than $A500. About 25% of respondents had a component replaced because of ‘failure during normal use’. Testing was most likely following motor vehicle collisions and for bicycles with carbon components. Visual inspection was the most reported form of testing, and only 42% of respondents reported being aware of any non-destructive methods of testing. Results suggest that structural weakness in bicycles is fairly common while awareness of the issue, and methods of testing for it, is limited. Public education about when and how to test for weakness (eg, after any crash), and improvement in production standards and quality assurance, may reduce injuries due to bicycle failure. Data are available upon reasonable request. Unit record data cannot be shared due to ethics committee guidelines around privacy and potential identification of participants. Aggregate level study data can be provided on request.
