Our short break in Wales in 2011 was before the age of using phones to navigate and find things of interest but we had a road map and a rough idea what direction we wanted to travel each day and just went with the flow. Our first day saw us head north from our inn at Tremadog and to the island of Anglesey where we decided to drive anticlockwise around it on the lookout for interesting sights. The first one was Beaumaris Castle, a late thirteenth century fortification built from local stone, moated, and in a symmetrical form. Its walls were in good condition, having escaped the practice of slighting (deliberately damaging) that followed strategic structures that had been loyal to the King during the Civil War.
