References can make or break the art you're working on, so it's important to collect or make good ones. I chat about collecting reference and using 3D to make your own in my public September 2022 entry:

The main thing that tipped me off that I might be #ActuallyAutistic (ie. #AuDHD) is my obsession with systems.

I updated my 10 year old blog post to add my current system for keeping and managing ideas for more elaborate drawings and paintings: https://neladunato.com/blog/how-to-handle-crazy-influx-of-ideas-and-keep-ideas-organized/

Since I have a million paper sketchbooks, this is the only way to keep my all ideas where they're easy to find.

How to handle a crazy influx of ideas and keep ideas organized

You might have more ideas than you know what to do with — it's both a blessing and a curse. Here are my suggestions how to handle this 'problem'.

It's OK to feel more comfortable not using the "good paper" & the "good pens", if it helps you to create. There is no shame in not using expensive art supplies.
Getting a good knowledge of your basics is what makes you become a better artist, eventually, not the supplies you use.

When shading, try to keep in mind that shadows, most of the time, are not black. Using a darker shade of the color you want to put a shadow on will make the transition look much smoother.
Also, you can try using the complementary color of the base one to apply shadows.

mid-tier art tip:

problems with your kneaded eraser drying out? need a pleasant way to travel with it?

use an Altoids container!

i've been carrying my kneaded eraser in a little altoids can for a year or two now, and it's still soft and pliable right out of the tin! no kneading required!

try it out sometime!

Even in a world with a billion youtube videos, I still get many questions on what books do I recommend for learning how to make art. So here's a list of some of my favs and why you should consider getting them: http://www.neilblevins.com/art_lessons/art_learning_books/art_learning_books.htm #arttip #artressources #artlessons #arteducation
A new written tutorial that discusses shadows, combining century old traditional 2d practices with a few thoughts on how this applies to modern digital 3d. Will be using this for my upcoming classes. http://www.neilblevins.com/art_lessons/shadow_types/shadow_types.htm #arttip #lighting #shadows

It's OK to draw the same things over & over again. You don't need to stop doing that. If you've found your comfort zone, it's fine to not leave it, as long as you're happy there. Many artists are well known for having done that, painting only portraits or landscapes.

In 8 or even 9 out of 10 cases, your finished artwork will look at least acceptable, despite your raw line art/sketch hasn't been "love at first sight". Don't throw that thing away, just give it a chance & see what becomes of it. You might be in for a pleasant surprise.
