Polar bears act as crucial providers for Arctic species

A new study published in the scientific journal Oikos reveals for the first time the critical role polar bears play as carrion providers for Arctic species. Researchers from University of Manitoba and San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, alongside researchers from Environment and Climate Change Canada, and the University of Alberta, have estimated that polar bears leave behind approximately 7.6 million kilograms of their prey annually, creating a massive and vital food source for a wide network of arctic scavenger species.

The #bowheadwhale, a giant, #Arctic-dwelling species bigger than a bus, evidence suggesting they live over 200yr. There are currently bowhead whales swimming around #Alaska that were alive when #MobyDick was written in 1851.
Other large #whales also enjoy relatively long lives; #bluewhales, can reach up to 90 years of age. Nevertheless, none can rival the extreme longevity of the #bowhead.

Scientists describe an extinct rhino species from Canada's High Arctic

Scientists from the Canadian Museum of Nature have announced the discovery and description of an extinct rhinoceros from the Canadian High Arctic. The nearly complete fossil skeleton of the new species was recovered from the fossil-rich lake deposits in Haughton Crater on Devon Island, Nunavut and is the most northerly rhino species known.

Top Story in the Arctic this week, October 28th!

Doug Burgum, the Secretary of the US interior department, declared that the entire Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is now open for oil and gas drilling. Then, Burgum signed a series of permits to allow the construction of the Ambler Road project, a road stretching for over 200 miles, or about 340 kilometers, through Alaskan wilderness to expand mining opportunities. Finally, he signed documents to allow the King Cove road project to begin, which will build a road through a sensitive bird sanctuary to connect the town of King Cove with its nearest airport.

These projects are set to open Alaska up to industry like never before, but at real risk to the Arctic environment.
