THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In 1852, the Chilkat Indians from the coast arrived at Fort Selkirk, and finding it only partially defended took it over and chased the HBC men under Robert Campbell away from their own post. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #Yukon https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/destruction-fort-selkirk/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
The men of the North West Company called the passage through the Cascade Mountains the "Long Narrows." For the HBC men it was just called the Grande Dalles, or Big Canyon if translated into English. Whatever name they gave to this narrows, it was a long and hard upriver passage, both for the men of the HBC Brigades, and those of the York Factory Express! #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #YorkFactoryExpress https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/grande-dalles/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In his notes taken from Robert Campbell's correspondence and his journals, Chief Trader James Anderson is able to accurately describe Campbell's route into Fort Selkirk and give an accurate timing for the journey. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NWT #Yukon https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/liard-river-notes/
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
In 1846, artist Paul Kane travelled west from Norway House with the incoming #Saskatchewan Brigades, and found himself at Edmonton House fairly late in the year. His journey west would continue.... #YorkFactoryExpress #HBCHistory #Journeys https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/paul-kane-4/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In summer 1852, Chief Trader James Anderson journeyed down the Mackenzie River, travelling from Fort Simpson to Fort Good Hope to deliver the goods and to bring in the furs that had been traded in over the winter. #Journeys #ThreeJourneysNorth #NorthwestTerritories https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-good-hope/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
The HBC Brigades, and the York Factory Express, travelled much the same route every summer, but never at the same time nor in the same direction. In 1826, James Connolly arrived at Fort #Vancouver #WA in mid summer, at the same time that John McLeod's Express was at York Factory, on Hudson Bay. #TheHBCBrigades #YorkFactoryExpress #Journeys https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigades-and-expresses/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
In 1851, Fort Selkirk's chief trader Robert Campbell made his way up the Mackenzie River, travelling from to north and surprising all the gentleman at the headquarters of Fort Simpson who did not expect him to come from that direction. #NorthwestTerritories #NWT #Yukon #Journeys https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/fort-simpson/
THE YORK FACTORY EXPRESS: FORT VANCOUVER TO HUDSON BAY, 1826-1849
From the #Edmonton House post journals we learn more about the incoming Expresses that travelled through that historic place, and of course there are sometimes stories that are told nowhere else in the surviving records. #Journeys #YorkFactoryExpress #HBCHistory https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/edmonton-post-journal/
THREE JOURNEYS NORTH TO THE ARCTIC SEA:
There were ramparts on the #Yukon River, and on the Porcupine: they were places where high rock walls narrowed the rivers and created a claustrobic feeling. However, magnificent as these ramparts mightbe, the Ramparts of the Mackenzie River were a magnificent sight that was not to be forgotten. #Journeys #NorthWestTerritories #Journeys https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/ramparts/
THE HBC BRIGADES: CULTURE, CONFLICT, & PERILOUS JOURNEYS
In 1826, and in 1831, the men in the HBC Brigades began their one-thousand-mile boat and packhorse journey North to #FortStJames from their headquarters of Fort #Vancouver #WA at the mouth of the Columbia River. #Journeys #TheHBCBrigades #WestOfTheMountains https://nancymargueriteanderson.com/brigade-nine/
