AGI - La Corte d'Appello di Trieste ha assolto il sacerdote e docente di religione Ioan Marginean Cocis al processo di secondo grado per la morte di Penelope Cossaro, la bimba di 7 anni schiacciata da un'acquasantiera il 21 novembre 2019 durante una lezione di catechismo nella chiesa di Santa Chiara dell'educandato Uccellis che ha sede a Udine.
Confermata inoltre l'assoluzione della dirigente scolastica Anna Maria Zilli, già decisa in primo grado. La sentenza ribalta così parzialmente il verdetto del Tribunale di Udine, che aveva condannato padre Ioan a 2 anni e 4 mesi per omicidio colposo.
La reazione della famiglia
Durissimo lo sfogo della madre di Penelope, Laura Libanetti. La donna ha definito la decisione vergognosa auspicando un eventuale ricorso in Cassazione da parte della Procura, dal momento che la famiglia non si è costituita parte civile nell'appello, ma ha scelto la via del processo civile per il risarcimento.

The Puglia region is being used as a dumping ground for waste from Campania. This is revealed by “Operation Erebus,” the code name for investigations by the Bari District Attorney’s Office and the Noe Carabinieri, which documented 64 sites and 126 episodes of illicit waste dumping organized by “Cerignolani” and Salerno criminal organizations, a key axis of environmental crime. Approximately 3,500 tons of waste were illegally disposed of, often burned, primarily in the provinces of Foggia and Barletta-Andria-Trani, including the Tavoliere Plain, the Alta Murgia National Park, private agricultural lands, quarries, and abandoned industrial buildings.

On Wednesday, May 27th, Carabinieri executed 19 precautionary measures (6 house arrests, 7 obligations to appear before the judicial police, and 6 one-year bans from conducting business activities) across the provinces of Foggia, Salerno, Naples, Benevento, Rome, and Latina. Thirty individuals are under investigation, 16 companies are implicated, and 132 charges have been filed.

The illicit dumping occurred almost exclusively in Puglia: in Bari, Minervino Murge, Margherita di Savoia, Candela, Ostuni, Trinitapoli, Foggia, Molfetta, Castelluccio dei Sauri, Ascoli Satriano, Cerignola, Lucera, Barletta, Manfredonia, Carapelle, Andria, Ordona, Ortanova, and Stornarella. It also occurred outside the region, in Rome, Ferentino, Ripi, Cassino, Anagni, San Martino Valle Caudina, and Casamarciano.

These figures represent a summary of a roughly 460-page order issued by Judge Ilaria Casu, following a request from prosecutors Marco D’Agostino and Domenico Minardi. The order stems from citizen complaints regarding air pollution and observations of illegal waste dumping in Cerignola, reported by municipal police and forestry officials, starting in April 2022. The discovery of a pile of garbage at Madonna di Ripalta and the truck that dumped it – a blue vehicle with a white semi-trailer bearing a dark, wavy logo – led to the identification of the truck's license plate. The vehicle was registered to a company not listed in the National Environmental Manager Registry, managed by a Cerignola businessman. This marks the beginning of the investigation into the “Cerignolani.”

The investigation utilized standard investigative techniques: wiretaps revealing the defendants' awareness of the illicit nature of the operations, GPS and cellular data tracking of trucks, videos from surveillance cameras in warehouses and fields, and checks and seizures confirming the falsity of transport codes. "These are criminal actions," one defendant stated on the phone while dumping packaging and cardboard in Foggia.

Each illegal disposal operation was “meticulously organized and equipped from a logistical standpoint,” even utilizing "a network of accomplices and lookouts who ensured there were no police checks.” The coordinator of Bari’s District Attorney’s Office, Giuseppe Gatti, explained. “There were also people available to facilitate these operations.” Prosecutor Roberto Rossi recalled that the pollution caused by this continuous flow of waste "poses serious health problems for the people of Puglia and threatens the beauty of a territory we cherish and must protect."
