"In the 1970s and early 80s, buying a stereo system was an event. You walked into a specialist store, sat down, and listened for hours. The salesman knew every component by heart. You went home and saved up for months.

The equipment was built to last a lifetime. Some of it still sounds better than anything made today.
So what happened? How did we go from 45-kilogram receivers and hand-matched components to Bluetooth speakers and streaming algorithms? And who — or what — is really responsible?"—Famous Brands History

@WiteWulf

I have a relative who seems to think so.

But there is a fairly huge second-hand market for separates. People are still dumping 20th and early 21st century kit.

When I was looking around a few months ago from having spoken to the relative, there were also available 2nd hand a lot of vastly overfeatured things like "recievers" that had inputs for HDMI, TOSLink, composite video, component video, RCA audio, VGA, USB, and Ethernet.

#Bluetooth is a common lack in such older kit. But the relative would find bluetooth fairly fiddly, so I wasn't taking it into consideration myself. On the other hand, there are lots of convert-XYZ-to-bluetooth-headphones boxes Out There.

On the gripping hand, today's mega-tellies do a lot of this stuff. I need to persuade the relative that xe doesn't actually need to duplicate what xyr existing mega-telly already does. No need for a "tuner" any more. Classic FM is right there on cable. (-:

SIAS 2025 Show Report

My first time at the Shenzhen International Audio Show, and boy was it busy, interesting, and with tons of new gear on display.

I didn't cover every company there, but enough to get 3 pages of reporting in today's feature, now published on Headfonics!
