Some really great updates in Mastodon's latest Trunk & Tidbits blog post, including, from the W3C Social Web working group notes, a note on LOLA, a "proposal for live online account portability between two ActivityPub servers".

Account portability would be a great thing. Mastodon's portability isn't perfect, it has some notable limitations, but it's nice you can at least take a number of things with you across servers as your needs dictate.

People need to be able to move around. No system should be a prison, and platforms where we can move if we need to are exactly what the world needs right now.

"I love seeing people like BlueSky try things with AT Protocol where it has true account portability across servers ..."

Well ... not really. It solves the problem by getting rid of independent servers. Replacing them with portable account islands ("PDS"), that are totally dependent on a connection with a Titter-scale platform ("Relay" + "AppView") to do anything.

Composable moderation is one of the things ATProto/BlueSky gets right, along with account portability between data stores. I wonder how much of this can be added to fediverse software using the Zot creator's FEPs? Which I assume are being implemented in his new project called Forte;

here's a somewhat neat idea - you know how the #fediverse has this idea of the "Move" activity, the one that gets sent out to announce you're moving to a different server when you do an acct migration?
...wouldn't it be neat if - upon receiving such a "Move" activity - the receiving server just,, automatically started displaying all of the posts it has from your old account, right on your new account?

you don't even need to copy or modify all the old activities or anything!! just keep some kind of "account migration history" or something like that! and then - when queried by a client for the statuses of an account - just return all known posts of all of the accounts in that history!

it's not quite a full migration of your data, but it's kinda?? better than nothing?? it's basically what #nostr is doing, too, afaik.

it's not entirely my idea, it's kind of a half-assed compromise of what @/[email protected] proposed in their blog post: https://www.nova-prime.net/social%20media/2024/07/22/mastodon-immortal.html
still, though!! might try to see if I could add something like that into akkoma, maybe!!

Why Meta is looking to the fediverse as the future for social media | TechCrunch

Meta's move into the open social web, also known as the fediverse, is puzzling. Does the Facebook owner see open protocols as the future? Will it embrace

TechCrunch
#ATProtocol / #Bluesky & #ActivityPub / #Mastodon #federation differences: global conversation (non local-server based with #remote #content only brought in from follows); #decentralized user account not bound to specific #host; user-composable #moderation lists not tied to server, offsetting need for #defederation; user-composable #feeds/ #algorithms, not tied to #servers; and #accountportability, without need to initiate by server, protecting users from #rogue #admins or server dissapearing.
