Tragedia in Austria: l’ex portiere della Juventus, Alexander Manninger, è morto a 48 anni in un incidente stradale avvenuto giovedì mattina vicino a Salisburgo, dopo uno scontro tra la sua auto e un treno locale a un passaggio a livello. Secondo le prime ricostruzioni, l’incidente è avvenuto poco dopo le 8.20 vicino alla fermata di Pabing, su un attraversamento ferroviario senza barriere. Il veicolo, un minivan, è stato gravemente danneggiato nell’impatto con un treno regionale. I circa 25 passeggeri del treno e il conducente sono rimasti illesi, mentre per l’ex portiere non c’è stato nulla da fare nonostante i rapidi soccorsi e i tentativi di rianimazione. Le cause dell’incidente restano ancora da chiarire. Le autorità stanno analizzando i dati elettronici del veicolo e verificando anche il corretto funzionamento del segnale rosso al passaggio a livello.
Manninger si trovava da solo in auto al momento dello schianto. Nato a Salisburgo, Manninger era stato uno dei portieri più rappresentativi del calcio austriaco. Dopo gli inizi con l’Austria Salzburg, nel 1997 era diventato il primo austriaco a trasferirsi in Premier League con l’Arsenal, vincendo nella stagione 1997/98 il ‘double’ campionato-FA Cup. Nel corso della carriera aveva giocato in diversi club europei, soprattutto in Italia, tra cui Juventus e Siena, oltre a esperienze con Liverpool e Ausburgo. Con la nazionale austriaca ha collezionato 34 presenze, partecipando anche agli Europei del 2008 come secondo portiere. Manninger aveva concluso la carriera nel 2017.

Tragedy in Austria: Former Juventus goalkeeper Alexander Manninger died at 48 in a road accident that occurred on Thursday morning near Salisburgo, following a collision between his car and a local train at a level crossing. According to initial reconstructions, the accident occurred shortly after 8:20 am near the Pabing station on an unmanned railway crossing. The vehicle, a minivan, was severely damaged in the impact with a regional train. The approximately 25 passengers on the train and the driver were unharmed, while nothing could be done for the former goalkeeper despite rapid rescue efforts and resuscitation attempts. The cause of the accident remains to be clarified. Authorities are analyzing the vehicle’s electronic data and also checking the correct functioning of the red signal at the level crossing.
Manninger was alone in the car at the time of the crash. Born in Salisburgo, Manninger was one of the most representative goalkeepers of Austrian football. After his beginnings with Austria Salzburg, in 1997 he became the first Austrian to transfer to the Premier League with Arsenal, winning the ‘double’ of the league and FA Cup in the 1997/98 season. Throughout his career he played for several European clubs, especially in Italy, including Juventus and Siena, as well as experiences with Liverpool and Augsburg. He collected 34 appearances with the Austrian national team, also participating in the 2008 European Championships as a second goalkeeper. Manninger ended his career in 2017.
