A few weeks ago I fixed a bug in #OpenZFS and I can't stop thinking about it.

An (almost) catastrophic OpenZFS bug and the humans that made it (and Rust is here too)

A couple of weeks ago I fixed a nasty bug in this function in OpenZFS:

I’ve created an RFC to re-license #PHP under the Modified BSD License (BSD-3-Clause).

Please spread this far and wide. Discussion is open for 6 months so everyone can voice concerns or ask questions.

php.internals: [RFC] Updating the PHP License

“When developers are allowed to use AI tools, they take 19% longer to complete issues—a significant slowdown that goes against developer beliefs and expert forecasts. This gap between perception and reality is striking: developers expected AI to speed them up by 24%, and even after experiencing the slowdown, they still believed AI had sped them up by 20%.” https://metr.org/blog/2025-07-10-early-2025-ai-experienced-os-dev-study/

The #homeautomation protocol is named #Thread, perhaps that is a typo as #Threat is more apt and accurate. If you roll your own device you might very well experience the full force of their blood thirsty lawyers.

New #PHP RFC just dropped:

@ramsey massive! I can’t imagine the behind the scenes work needed for this <3

HUGE new RFC in PHP-land: Updating the somewhat messy and slightly unwieldy PHP license to BSD 3-clause.

Addendum: It's also wild how project planning does not seem to take into account the psychic damage that the team will incur in doing it. Like, how does no one factor the morale of the engineering team into these things? Engineers don't even get shot for desertion, they get raises at another companies for leaving, the current system isn't even rational on the grounds of capitalism.

You MUST listen to RFC 2119.

Eric Bailey: It turns out you can just pay people to do things. I found a voice actor and hired them with the task of "Reading this very dry technical document in the most over-the-top sarcastic, passive-aggressive,...

@jwz This is how everything from freedesktop.org/gnome sounds in my head.
@jwz so much more engaging than the voices used in my employer's compulsory online training courses
@jwz I loved number 5. 🙂
I'm literally rolling on the floor, cannot contain the laughter. Thanks for this, I needed it.
@jwz I could do that better

@codinghorror @jwz Prove it

(Seriously, you’ve got a mic, we all need this)

@luis_in_brief @jwz

Yes, go @codinghorror

Even if it's not better we all want to hear your attempt.

@u47 @jwz "it ain't bragging if you can back it up"

@jwz At some point in the far-flung future this is going to be unearthed anew, and future people will assume that this was just how the people who built the internet *were*.

"No wonder civilization broke down completely by 2030," they'll say. "Listen to how absolutely insufferable those people were. Why, they *deserved* to perish in the COVID-locust inferno-canes. Praise be to Vance the Savior!"

@WesternInfidels And they would not be wrong.
@jwz @catsalad Brilliant 😂😂💀

@jwz this is so good :)))
@jwz I started playing that in Ivory’s in-app browser and as it turns out closing Ivory’s in-app browser does not stop playback, so now I’m getting the full experience with no way to stop it lol (other than killing the app)

@jwz I don't know whether I want to congratulate the voice actor, or slap the hell out of them.
@jwz This is more hilarious than I imagined and I could almost imagine I was hearing it in the voice of Astarion.
@jwz Well this is certainly helping with travel planning for the next IETF meeting.
