If We Have Everything We Need...

“We have everything we need.” That’s how Betsy answered when Denver Frederick asked her how our children sparked her passion for GMI pilots in rural counties across the country. Raising kids obviously has many challenges, and one is: How do you raise your kids to… obviously we’re very

Watching Fedi and the world react to the US president go absolutely unhinged in public, threatening war crimes as his cognitive grip disintegrates before our eyes, watching the horror and the outrage…there is something I want to tell you from Minneapolis.

And I’m not sure how, and I’m not sure if I can, but I want to try. People are always thanking us and calling us heroes and asking us for some kind of…something, anything we can offer in the face of the authoritarian march, and well, here it is, here is something, if I can figure out how to say it.

Maybe they can fashion a crude sail from the debris of a port-a-potty.

"The amount of untaxed wealth hidden offshore by the richest 0.1 percent exceeds the entire wealth of the poorest half of humanity (4.1 billion people), according to a new Oxfam analysis published on April 2, 2026, ahead of the 10th anniversary of the Panama Papers."

The consequences are as predictable as they are devastating:

we see our public hospitals and schools starved of funds,

our social fabric shredded by rising inequality,

and ordinary people forced to shoulder the costs of a system rigged to enrich a tiny few.

Untaxed wealth hidden offshore by richest 0.1% surpasses entire wealth of the poorest half of humanity: Oxfam

Oxfam’s new analysis reveals that untaxed offshore wealth held by the richest 0.1% now exceeds the entire wealth of the poorest half of humanity, exposing how tax havens fuel extreme inequality and urging global action to tax the super-rich and end secrecy.

"Dr. Cornel West frequently uses this phrase to explain that love and justice are not competing ideals, but rather the exact same force applied in different spheres of human life. He often draws heavily on the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., asserting that true love cannot be passive.

The core message is that if you genuinely care for humanity, you cannot remain indifferent to suffering or exploitation. In your personal life, love might manifest as affection, kindness, or tenderness. But in the civic and political sphere, love must manifest as a demand for fairness, equity, and the dismantling of oppressive systems. Essentially, fighting for justice is the ultimate act of loving your neighbor."

email response to me, last sentence:

"All of that said, I hear the frustration behind your note — and it’s warranted. The question, to me, isn’t whether the system is under strain (it clearly is), but whether there are still levers to pull. I believe there are, even if they’re imperfect and slower than any of us would like." (note use of emdashes in this way, and earlier in the reply consistently, strongly implies this is a LLM response, not a human one)

my reply:

"This is an assault on fundamental human dignity and civil rights. Not the kind of thing you give any quarter to, but we have zero leaders (that I can see, anyway) of the heroic Lincoln / Roosevelt caliber necessary to lead us through this as a whole. I hope one emerges, but that is a thin, thin thread indeed.."

@codinghorror In 2018 Michigan voters passed a constitutional amendment to create a redistricting body, and the GOP legislature did their best to not provide funding. It happened eventually but they delayed and underfunded as much as they could.
